[US DVD] Special A Collection 1 Review

In Summary:
Special A felt really mediocre overall throughout it. When the show opens with little in the way of a real setup, instead just running through the seven special class members quickly and getting into things, it felt like we were dropped into a show without a really unique hook. Their being in a special class wasn't enough. As the show progresses, you realize that the other five members of the class really don't have much impact overall and its main focus is on Kei and Hikari and the slowly burgeoning relationship. What struck me the most with this show is that as it got to the end of this set, it felt like it was more the end of the series than the halfway mark. Special A feels all played out by episode twelve and that doesn't bode well for the second half that's still to come.

All I will say about the second half is that in some ways things get better, but in other ways things get worse.

In general, I think the series could have turned out better if a few things or rather several things were done differently.

I think in some ways Hikari was the most frustrating character. Don't me get wrong there are things I like about her.

However one aspect of her character bothered me quite a bit. An aspect that existed purely for the purpose of slowing down any possible progress and nothing else.

In general, my feelings on the series remain mixed.

When I first saw this, I liked it more then Ouran. Granted I hadn't seen all of Ouran at the time. But now that I have, I'd like to see more of this show and see if my opinion changes.

Another Sentai series that I started to watch a few weeks ago. So far it just didn't click with me. It just seem average. I will still watch the 2nd half and I wouldn't mind it getting better as Suika Ibuki had said.
