Apparently, it's alleged to be a DS that tracks the location of your head to implement "3D effects" (this is as opposed to 3dfx, of course — I had one of their cards about a decade ago, and it sucked balls even compared to the lame-ass ATi on-board video in my old Power Mac G3). What isn't known, mind you, is whether this is an iteration on the current DS/Lite/i/iXL platform or a whole new hardware. It will, however, play DS games.
Now, I just bought a DSi this past January or so, as my DS Lite wasn't as touchy as it used to be, but thanks to Bowser's Inside Story and Devil Survivor, I think I've already gotten value out of it commensurate with what it cost. Still, this new thing's supposed to be out during the 2011 fiscal year (April 2010–March 2011), at least in Japan, and I'm beginning to believe that Nintendo is, in fact, pumping new DSs out a bit too quickly.

I've had that thought before this version even was announced. Either way I'd rather build up my DS library before even considering upgrading. Not that I have much motivation with them making so many new versions.

...and the DSi is once again proved an incredible waste of time, and I'm glad I never upgraded to one. Seriously, though, 3D? I'm getting tired of companies tripping over themselves to incorporate that gimmick. -_-'

If that's the case, perhaps Nintendo has made it more casual friendly after over ten years. And Nintendo was the first to use touch screen technology and not suck at it.

Apparently the graphics on this are Gamecube quality.
If so...this could mean a port of Super Mario Sunshine?

I imagine it'll use a combination of camera-based head tracking and tilt sensing to generate Johnny Lee-style 3D effects on a 2D screen without the need for glasses.
But more importantly, this provides an interesting way of differentiating the 3DS from its PSP and iPad competitors. When the DS launched, touch screen gaming was still a novelty. Yet now that every fancy phone under the sun has that feature, Nintendo needs something else to bring people on board. I expect it'll be printing money soon enough.

I think there is something lost in translation. I am positive that the name 3DS has ABSOLUTELY NO CONNECTION WHAT SO EVER to 3D gaming (it says 3D effects, but I'm sure they probably just mean 3D graphics). Nintendo is a Japanese company. Japanese like to make up words with our language. Most likely the 3D means one of two things:
1. A third revision of the DS series, but since it would be technically the forth, I don't think this is it. 2. They will concentrate on better 3D graphics instead of 2D. This is what I think what 3DS means.

Hey, now. In the late 90s, 3dfx was pretty hot shit. I had a Voodoo2 SLI setup back in the day, and it rocked. It was pretty much the only way to get 1024x768 out of Unreal.
