That's not exactly true.
Gintama DVD's always shift around 10k on first week of release.
Hitman Reborn DVD's usually shift around 4-5k on first week.
One Piece DVD's usually shift around 2-3k on first week.
Naruto Shippuden DVD's usually shift around 2-3k on first week.
Couldn't find any figures for Bleach or Fairy Tail though...

The main theme here is that people are less willing to purchase DVD's for a 100+ ep series, especially if it's still on-going. Same for US DVD releases really.
So if such series are already going to be average/low sellers on DVD, then people are hardly going to want to purchase an even more expensive Blu-ray release when the source isn't even native HD.
The only shonen that would be worth it is One Piece, since that has a greater budget than all the other shows combined and managed to shift over to native HD production some time ago. Even so, would be kinda silly to have half a show on Blu-ray and the older SD eps look kinda bad, especially when they are 4:3. Again though, it's a rather average/poor seller on DVD, so not financially viable.

It was a generalization, and holds true in most cases, especially compared to how big the franchise is in allother areas.

Gintama is definitely one of the major exceptions and I've cited it as such in the past, just not in this thread. Reborn's sales aren't bad.

Right, exactly. This is what a mediocre-to-average level late night otaku series does. I don't think that disproves the point I was intending to make, in fact it's part of what I based the point on.

I think Bleach is around Naruto/OP levels, but I'd have to double-check. Fairy Tail barely cleared 1000 for Vol. 1.

Movies and OVAs for these franchises, I should add, do far far better. Which is not surprising, of course.

What I was getting at is that home video sales generally aren't their focus, thus they aren't necessarily going to rush to release BD (which only otaku really care about) for them. They make their boatloads of money on other merch.

I'd love for Fairy Tail to get a DVD release in the U.S. even more so if it was uncut AND had a really good english dub.

This was said at FuniCon 3.0. Being on Crunchyroll decreases the odds (At least, as Funimation is concerned), but will not eliminate the possibility, completely.

It's time to graduate from here. But there's still some business left.
The only thing better than anime is sports. Get hit hard and you got JACKED UP! Or else it's a C'mon Man!

Isn't Fairy Tail a bit of a different animal where streaming is concerned since the episodes are subscriber only and disappear after 30 days? I know it is a streaming rights issue, but perhaps after the 30 days the rights revert back to the production committee and wouldn't affect a future R1 release. I mean it is not like Funi would ever get within a year of broadcasting episodes with their releases let alone 30 days.

I really think people look at this the wrong way.

It's not so much that being on CR decreases the odds of a license. Rather, the odds of a license being low increases the odds of CR getting it.

Only if you are not looking at it from the angle of FUNi is entitled to everything, so anything anyone else gets is just stealing from what FUNi would otherwise be doing.

Unless of course one were to look how their "new" output has slowed and much of what they are releasing in any given month are rereleases.

Then again if someone hasn't bought the title yet I guess it is "new" to them.

Why would you think I feel this way? I'd honestly not care one way or another if Funi never licensing anything ever again.

I know how you feel about FUNi (and VIZ as well).

I also have read posts from other posters who feel that FUNi deserves to have everything.

laying Devil's Advocate instead of Sakura Wars for some reason:

Seriously, maybe in the case of select series it makes a difference. However I suspect a good portion of them are either in category A or B.

A: Well, it's less desirable, but we'd have to be idiots to pass up on releasing this here.

B: As if we were ever going to license it anyway.

In other words, for the B type series CR would be more of an excuse than anything else. Also, I get the feeling that the B stuff surpasses the A stuff. Or maybe I'm just being cynical.
