That was my understanding, although it's hard to know for any individual property.

Shaft is like madhouse in that they are exclusively work for hire to my knowledge.

Although some of the individuals involved in the project like the director or series animator might get royalties, SHAFT is paid lump sums and nothing else.

A successful DVD seller means that they'll get a bigger budget to make the sequel, and that's it.

Shaft also is a relatively small operation that uses a large number of subcontracted anime studios.

Weren't they working out of a warehouse at one point?

Their studio is in Nerima, so that description could apply to most of the commercial buildings there .

Whoever made the list excluded REC, for whatever reason... (maybe because it's shorter than the typical TV series? or it completely bombed?) I was kind of curious how it did.

I don't see it at all on the 2006 list at AS. I'm guessing it just never charted. It was released in a single boxset (well it's only about 110 minutes) in 2006.

http://yunakiti.blog79.fc2.com/blog-entry-5818.html Full BD/DVD list.

Haha, what do you know, Arakawa really was right below the initial #30/2206 cut-off. #32 for 2179 DVDs. 2145 BDs for 4,324 total. Maybe it'll cross the 5k line. That's a bit better than I expected.

Will add Arakawa to the Spring Vol. 1 list. Updated AB! with its 715 extra BDs in week 3. Speaking of... Angel Beats! crosses the 40k mark! 40,002 to be precise.

K-ON!! Let's Go! Live adds 1602/2422 more for a total of 10599/24437, or 35,036.

As usual a bunch of K-ON! S1 discs place. This is Vol. 1 BD's 20th weekly appearance in the list. I went back through a few of the lists I have saved and it's really rare for a TV series to appear so many times. Only movies and OVAs tend to reach double digits. Most stuff is lucky to reach 4 times.

Title - # appearances - last appearance

Bake 1 - 32 [7/05]
Bake 2 - 25 [6/07]
Bake 3 - 22 [5/10]
K-ON 1 - 20 [7/05]
Bake 4 - 19 [6/14]
K-ON 4 - 17 [7/05]
K-ON 5 - 17 [7/05]
K-ON 6 - 16 [7/05]
K-ON 7 - 16 [7/05]
K-ON 2 - 14 [5/10]
K-ON 3 - 14 [6/07]
Bake 5 - 14 [6/28]
Haruhi 2k9 1 - 11 [3/22]
Railgun 1 - 11 [4/05]

All BD except for Haruhi. So all of K-ON! and Bake have placed since 5/10. Only went back to the beginning of 2010.

Blue Seed sold 700 units ^^; The K-On! singles continues to sell a hundred or so a week. I wonder if releasing a boxset now might be a good idea.

I wonder if they don't just make more money letting ~1000 units move every single week. Unless those units are moving at sale prices or something, and they probably aren't, that's a fair bit of money.

Since they can't release it as a BD-for-the-first-time box, I wonder what the hook/draw would be. I suppose if they priced it low enough they could get a whole new group of fans jumping in, but I can't see that happening. Have we seen any series that had a BD from the start rereleased in a boxset yet? I'm curious how the companies are going to go about that.

Btw, added a list of how many times each has appeared (according to the lists anyway, I wasn't about to count) after you replied. 32 times for Bake 1, damn. And I bet it has a few more left in it during slow weeks like this.

Keep in mind too that the market is currently pretty flush with used copies of K-on blurays.

Right now it's not hard to find all seven volumes used for around 30,000 yen, about 45% off the MSRP of the singles.
If they wait a year or two the used copies will get more scarce, especially for the later volumes that had smaller print runs, and they could release a box set at 35,000 or 40,000 and it would still sell.
Releasing a box set now for 30,000 or less would probably just end up undercutting their own future profits.
