Well here too, you have to remember that it's not just the tanks, but also the magazines the franchises run in from week to week (month to month, etc.). Not everyone who buys the magazines will buy the tanks, and vice-versa, and your attitude about "read/recycle" may depend on the situation. I suppose in this case you could make the argument that at least they're buying something, but I can't imagine the margins are all that high on some of these magazines; I think they're mostly advertisements for the tanks and other media, sort of like the TV broadcasts. But again, because we don't really have (many) manga magazines, we only think of buying the tanks as the thing that manga fans do. The different perspective is rather interesting.

While I don't exactly read them, I am familiar with the idea of magazines carrying manga. It's just that I was mainly focused on the tank side of things more than anything else. Although I suppose, I should have taken the magazine side into account as well. Quote:
I would suspect the same. Mostly because a magazine is carrying multiple series. Plus, it's possible that some series may not have a chapter included every volume. So when you buy a mag, you're paying for multiple series at once. On the other hand, a tank seems to be in most cases (I'm sure someone will point to an exception) focused on one series. So buying volume 1 of X means all the money should go towards X and not any other series. The idea of others buying manga magazines isn't exactly foreign to me. Even if again, I tend to be more tank focused. Which brings me to the obvious notion that I tend to prefer tanks over magazines. Even if a mag would allow reading of multiple series at once.

For example I watched Angels and Demons (or whatever its called) at the cinema and did I buy the dvd? Nope instead I bought the novels so I could get an original version of it as well as a fresh experience. Also another factor imo would be material going past where the anime ends. Why wait and hope (sometimes to no avail) for a second season of Seitokai when I can just go buy the manga volumes for 3 & 4 and than start following Magazine. If a sequel comes out which would cover vol 3 and 4 I could be up to vol 8 by the time it even airs.

I found this pretty fascinating. It's a rundown of sales for shows, using the 2000-present list as far as I can tell, by each animation production company. Includes complete series only, so no K-ON!!, AB!, etc. I think it's using the more accurate w/o boxset sales, e.g. FMA at 36k not 50+k. Some shows are listed more than once, for example they have Mahoromatic under Gainax and Shaft even though most people would think of it primarily as a Gainax show. Really shows who the powerhouses are... Kyoto Animation, 12 shows, 9 over 10k. The only ones under 10k were two FMP seasons (neither of which did badly) and poor SoraAge, their only show not to chart. But damnit, it's so goood. Oh and since this list doesn't include K-ON!!, make that 10 of 13 passing 10k.Shaft's list is amusing, of course. Remove Mahoro and drop Negima!? (I don't know where they got 12k, I'm seeing 8k elsewhere) and you've got one show with a per disc average nearly 10 times anything else they've done. Though its even bigger for Satellite, with their #2 after Macross F's 46k beign less than 3k for Aquarion. Sunrise is as expected: gundam gundam geass geass gundam gundam. A-1 is doing decently. Three over 10k, 4 with Working!!. Sora no Woto would be next at around 4k.

I was looking over JC Staff's lists for Mahoraba's numbers (which is there at 3656), but was wondering where the heck Azumanga Daioh was. Searching on the page though, it looks like there were some comments addressing that though. Also noticed that all of the Madhouse Galaxy Angel series are listed except the last one (X) is missing for some reason.

http://jbbs.livedoor.jp/bbs/read.cgi...1168328827/900 BD [revised - just fixed Koihime to LE not RE, added Hidamari] Yunakichi hasn't posted quite yet but this is where they get it from. K-ON!! Vol. 1 adds yet another 532 taking it to 40,313. Looks like it'll officially pass AB! 1 with next week's numbers because it's being a consistent seller. Individual volumes appearing on the rankings on six separate weeks is really, really, really rare. Vol. 2 adds 1,289 BDs to 36,487. Speaking of, Angel Beats! Vol. 3 adds 1,808/1,307 to 32,581. Koihime Otome Tairan Vol. 2 starts at 1,304/1,203 for 2,507. Guess this is the last season of Koihime we're getting, but at least it was a fantastic run for three seasons. Haruhi-chan/Churuya-san BD adds 455 to 3,338 total. Seitokai Yakuindomo Vol. 1 is still on the charts, with 370 more for 6,199. Gotta say, I didn't think it would be a show passing the 6k mark. Sekirei adds 498 BDs so we're looking at 7,042 discs. Over 7k! On a slightly anime-related note, the 39's Giving Day Project DIVA presents Hatsune Miku concert CD did 12,611/5,465 for 18,076 #9 DVD and #2 BD of the week. Go go Miku! It'll be another two lists before we see the next Vol. 1 number, which will be Asobi ni Iku yo. Big big big week after that, with Highschool of the Dead, Kuroshitsuji II, Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakamatachi, Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin, Shukufuku no Campanella, Nurarihyon no Mago and Strike Witches 2 all starting. I'll be curious to see how SW2's sales look considering it's coming out late in the week (a Friday). Spring Vol. 1 | Summer Vol. 1
