Default 2010 Book, CD, DVD, BD Top Sellers

http://yunakiti.blog79.fc2.com/blog-entry-7570.html

This appears to be a list of the highest grossing anime/manga franchises in Japan for all media combined - or at least print publications, DVDs, BDs and CDs. I'm not completely clear on the time period, but I assume it's just 2010.

Number one should be no surprise to anyone who knows anything at all about the anime/manga scene... moving 2-2.5 million copies per volume of manga and releasing a movie that sells hundreds of thousands of copies makes One Piece the utterly invincible god of Japan.

K-ON! takes number two, however. We finally get a nice combined number (lacking a few things like the PSP game and non-media merchandise, which we know are huge) for just how much this title is generating. It's definitely the only title on the list that isn't there primarily for manga. Even if you removed the manga entirely it would still be #2.

#1 - One Piece - ¥17.43bn [~$205m USD]

#2 - K-ON! - ¥5.00bn [$60.2m USD]

#3 - Fullmetal Alchemist - ¥3.10bn [$37.3m USD]

#4 - Naruto - ¥3.07bn [$36.1m USD]

#5 - Kimi ni Todoke - ¥3.04bn [$36.1m USD]

I wish I could more clearly see the breakdown of each column. Going by the numbers though it's obviously listed Book | CD | DVD | BD. Todoke is there almost purely on manga sales.

For K-ON! it looks like ¥935m manga, ¥1.7bn CD, ¥302m DVD and ¥2.1bn BD. Just goes to show how incredibly huge music is for the K-ON! franchise. It's nearly as lucrative as the Blu-Rays. i wonder what the last otaku series to get this high was? Had to be Bake in 2009, whatever the ranking was for that. It lacks the music sales of K-ON! though, but the BDs were significantly higher. I wonder how that ended up...

This sort of list is meaningless unless you try and include merchandising and licensing rights as well.

Do that and I bet you that things like "Tetsuwan Atom" (it's had 50 years to sell merch and licensing rights, after all), "Pretty Cure", and "Dragonball" might well top one piece. and the others on the list.
Dragonball probably didn't sell that many billions of books back in the day, mainly because I bet more people read it in the magazines than collected the tanks back then.

Isn't this just a list of the top grossing properties in the last year? Broken down into the major categories. I don't see how this is particularly meaningless.

Oh, oops... I skimmed over that. I thought it was for all time. Well, take out some of my predictions, but my point still stands.
If you're going to include "all media", you should probably go ahead and include "anything that makes the production committee money" as well, including figures, merch, licensing rights, etc... That would give a better comparison of the true money-making ability of the properties.
Pretty Cure is would totally be on that list if you included merch. And if you include movie box office I bet NGE or Ghibli might be up there, too.

Of course, only manga and DVD/blu-ray sales numbers are easily obtainable. I don't think there's any public merchandising sales numbers available.

Er it's a list from Oricon. They're only reporting what they report. I also specified in the subject line and post what it included and the time frame.

Personally, I'm quite interested to know how the manga/cd/dvd/bd numbers play out. Of course merchandising is huge. But that's not what the list was intending to or able to include.

Sure, each one is interesting on its own, but when you only combine manga and cd/dvds, it seems kind of arbitrary. It's not like manga and DVD/blu-rays are even close to the same market, or for that matter, that the same companies profit from their sales.

kimi no todoke sold XXX almost entirely of manga, which means the manga company made a ton of money. K-on sold almost entirely from blu-rays, so pony canyon made a ton of money. Comparing the two in a "ranking" is just meaningless.
To me, once you start mixing media in your numbers that hit distinctly different demographics, the only interesting number would be "total revenue from the brand", and that would need to include all sources.

I guess what I take issue with is you finding the ranking based on manga+CD/DVD/BD actually being a meaningfull number. Manga on its own and DVD/BD on its own are meaningful, but their addition without inclusion of everything else seems to be pretty unhelpful.

Eh? It sold almost as much in CDs as BDs. Which is pretty remarkable given the BD numbers.

Then damn, take as much issue as you want. I'm actually quite interested in knowing the combined print, audio and video media sales of franchises in 2010. If we could get merch too that'd be great but it's not terribly likely (beyond some numbers from K-ON! indicating about $20m just from Apr1>Jun30 2010)and certainly has nothing to do with Oricon.

If you want dvd/bd only comparisons... oh that's the entire remainder of this thread! CD data has also been posted in the JP music forum from time to time when I or others have come across it. And manga/novels would be for the manga forums. I don't post there so I have no idea if anyone has been posting the data that's available. But it's out there, MAL news posts it every week.

You're objecting for good reason at all, and if you don't care about "Book, CD, DVD and BD" numbers don't read a post called "2010 Book, CD, DVD, BD Top Sellers". That's just stupid.

Full list.

Fall Vol 1s:
Hyakka Rouran Samurai Girls adds 527 BDs to 6,451. Interestingly, it charted again and Motto TLR didn't. Still a little short though. BD cutoff was 503.

Summer updates:
Basara 2 Vol. 3 as mentioned before starts at 10,594.

Slow week.

Spring updates:
Angel Beats!
AB! Vol 1: 40,442 (*4 wk)
AB! Vol 2: 35,483 (*4 wk)
AB! Vol 3: 33,251 (*4 wk)
AB! Vol 4: 31,782 (*4 wk)
AB! Vol 5: 30,922 (*3 wk)
AB! Vol 6: 26,401 -> 29,187 (*2 wk)
K-ON!!
!! Vol 1: 42,433 (12 wk)
!! Vol 2: 39,247 (*9 wk)
!! Vol 3: 38,747 (*7 wk)
!! Vol 4: 38,019 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 5: 37,325 -> 38,419 (*3 wk)

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu BD Box adds 2,164 to 32,723. Didn't add as much as I expected in the second week but 32.7k is still crazy.
Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st does adds 6,864/3,851 for 94,609. 100k incoming! Probably next week.
Tamayura adds 583 for 4,820.
Gundam UC Vol. 2 is at 153,710.
Katanagatari as of Vol. 9 is doing 4,031/2,284 for 6,315 first week.

Spring Vol. 1 | Summer Vol. 1 | Fall Vol. 1

Default 2010 12/06~12/12 Full list

http://jbbs.livedoor.jp/bbs/read.cgi...1168328827/989

Straight to the full list this week, no preliminary DVD list.

Fall Vol 1s:
...Nothing, actually. Still in the calm before the 11-show Christmas week storm.

Summer updates:
Basara 2 Vol. 3 increases 1,443 to 12,037. I think Strike Witches is pretty comfortably the best selling Summer series now. It was really close with Vol. 1. But shows aimed at male otaku seem to decline less volume-on-volume than shows aimed at women or more general audiences.

Spring updates:
Angel Beats!
AB! Vol 1: 40,442 (*4 wk)
AB! Vol 2: 35,483 (*4 wk)
AB! Vol 3: 33,251 (*4 wk)
AB! Vol 4: 31,782 (*4 wk)
AB! Vol 5: 30,922 (*3 wk)
AB! Vol 6: 29,187 -> 29,676 (*3 wk)
K-ON!!
!! Vol 1: 42,433 (12 wk)
!! Vol 2: 39,247 (*9 wk)
!! Vol 3: 38,747 (*7 wk)
!! Vol 4: 38,019 (*5 wk)
!! Vol 5: 38,419 -> 38,916 (*4 wk)

Huh, Vol. 5 has outsold 3 and 4 at this point and is very close to Vol. 2. Mio power I guess.

OVAs, Movies, Boxsets etc:
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu BD Box adds 577 to 33,300.
Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 1st adds 1,970/1,271 for 97,850. Ohh, so close to 100k. DVD probably won't rank again after this week so it might take another two weeks for BD to push it over the top. You can do it, Nanoha~
Gundam UC Vol. 2 is at 156,752.

Slow week again!

Spring Vol. 1 | Summer Vol. 1 | Fall Vol. 1

I think you accidentally added an extra "0" on the Haruhi BD box set total, something (EDIT: Or actually looking over the source, an extra "3" at the end rather)
