The play may be the thing, but we're past that now, as Yasuko decides it's time for Fumi to meet the family.
What They Say
Episode 7 - “When the Leaves were New”
The day after Fujigaya's theatrical festival, Akira and Fumi head off to Yokohama for a day to play. On that day, Fumi decided to stay over at Akira's place, making Sugimoto a bit uneasy as she expressed her thoughts to Akira. After hearing Akira's thoughts on the matter, Sugimoto decided to let it go. However, she later decides to invite Fumi to her home.

So, Fumi is not such a goody two-shoes after all, as she decides to play hooky. Akira goes with her on a shopping excursion to Yokohama (though Akira isn't ditching school, as her school has the day off). After the trip, Fumi asks Akira if she could stay over for the night. Sugimoto, who had been expecting Fumi to show up for practice that same day, was a little upset that Fumi apparently stood her up. But things are patched up pretty quickly and Yasuko asks Fumi to come over to her house on Saturday to meet her family.
And so it appears that the Sugimoto Family are on the wealthy side. Very wealthy, as they live in a large Japanese-style mansion. Yasuko also has three older sisters, one of whom had been a teacher at Fujigaya. The three older sisters and their mother have all gathered to meet Fumi. What was probably meant to be a quiet little chat over tea is instead turned into a rather tense situation when Yasuko unloads a little shocker on the family by flat out announcing that she and Fumi are dating. Kuri, the third eldest daughter, decides to torture Yasuko a little bit by doubting her love for Fumi, and also mentioning Yasuko's previous "relationship" in an oblique, yet devastatingly direct manner.
Of course, the real bombshell comes at the end of the episode, as a little quiet introspection leads to a major reevaluation of the state of affairs.
In Summary:
Relationships are never easy, and when family gets involved, the stresses and strains that may have been papered over before usually become very apparent. The relationship between Fumi and Yasuko, which was shown to have some areas of potential trouble lurking in the last episode, appears to be back on track as Fumi meets the family. But it is also exposed to a rather unwelcome spotlight of attention this time, a spotlight that is more unsettling for one of them than for the other. It will be interesting to see where things are headed from this point.
