For some, the Planet of the Apes is a bunch of people in lame rubber masks trying to act like apes. Others see it has a series of thought provoking ideas, incredible science fiction, and people performing in really cool make up. My Planet of the Apes obsession probably began very much like your own. My dad made me watch it and told me the end would blow my mind. After that it became a ritual to sit down and watch each and every one every time there was a marathon. Sure, the more recent Burton‘s Apes movie showed a lot of promise, but it left us with too many questions. In the vast empire that is the franchise of the Planet of the Apes, there have been tons of paraphernalia. A collector could go bananas trying to get it all, but your Toy Maniac has narrowed it down to some essential items. The following is Mania’s list of 10 toys a true Ape fan must have!
10. Dr. Zaius Bank

Greatest Planet of the Apes Merchandise

All right, so the first one on list isn’t really a toy. This vintage Planet of the Apes bank from 1968 is one of the rare collectibles and cool bedroom pieces that we all remember. It kicks starts off list for that reason and its cultural significance in the film Reality Bites
9. Planet of the Apes (2001) Thade with Steed

Greatest Planet of the Apes Merchandise

I once heard Burton’s Planet of the Apes called an abortion. It isn’t that bad, but it does have two shining moments. The first is the make up by Rick Baker and the second is Tim Roth’s performance. Rarely does an actor disappear into a role like Roth did. His General Thade figure easily makes our list for that reason alone.
8. Planet of the Apes Dr. Zaius 30th Anniversary Edition

Greatest Planet of the Apes Merchandise

There is a fine 12 inch version of Dr. Zaius by Sideshow Collectibles. This one by Hasbro, however, is an incredible and cheaper buy. It also has that perfect retro coolness for the collection.
7. Vision Lawgiver

Greatest Planet of the Apes Merchandise

The polystone statue of Lawgiver was a 2005 Comic Con exclusive. How exclusive? Only 100 of these bloody things were made. If this one, on the secondary market, is too expensive we suggest looking for the other and cheaper version down the list.
6. Slave Nova & Taylor 2-pack

Greatest Planet of the Apes Merchandise

This two pack featuring “Bright Eyes” and Nova is the only time that these characters have been packaged together. The Nova figure might not have the sex appeal of Linda Harrison, but for $75 she was perfect. These figures, of course, were sell outs at Sideshow Collectibles (see more pics here).
5. Dr. Zaius by Diamond Comic Distributors

Greatest Planet of the Apes Merchandise

Diamond released several retro Planet of the Apes characters a few years ago. The lure was that they were made in the old MECO style and came with the packaging. Picking up the original is an incredible find for the serious collector, but for the desk at work this Dr. Zaius is perfect.
4. Forbidden Zone Astronaut Taylor

Greatest Planet of the Apes Merchandise

Taylor here was Sideshow Collectible exclusive. Only 500 were ever made. What stings even worse is that he sold for only $45. Of course this 12 inch figure sold out. For complete details on Astronaut Taylor, check out the Sideshow page.
3. Planet of the Apes – Cornelius

Greatest Planet of the Apes Merchandise

Only 4,000 of the “ape with a shovel” were made and it sold for a mere $40. This Cornelius is a tad easier to find that some of the others on the list. Yet, this sculpt is a great embodiment of the character and a fitting tribute to Roddy McDowell as well.

2. Planet of the Apes Fortress

Greatest Planet of the Apes Merchandise

Definitely one of the greatest play sets ever constructed. Based on the TV series rather than the movies, this two story fortress had it all. It wasn’t until Castle Grayskull that one got as many weapons and accessories as in this playset.
1. Planet of the Apes Figures by Medicom Toys

Greatest Planet of the Apes Merchandise

By far, the greatest collection of figures for the films and even a few from the TV series were by Medicom Toys. Twenty figures in all to supply you with all the Ape awesomeness you would ever need. Highlights include Luscious, the Lawgiver statue, and Milo in his Ape-O-Naut outfit. Despite the lack of articulation, it was every figure you could want from the series (see complete line here)
