APES, JAWS Enter Film Registry

This year's list of 25 films inducted into the National Film Registry have been announced, and it includes the original PLANET OF THE APES, JAWS, THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, ANIMAL HOUSE and even ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN.

Each year, the Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington, selects 25 film works that are "culturally, historically or esthetically" significant for inclusion in the Registry. By being named to the list, the Library of Congress works to ensure that the designated film is preserved for all time, which could either be through the Library's motion picture preservation program in Dayton, Ohio, or in conjunction with other archives, the studios that own the films and/or independent filmmakers.
