October 19, 2001... Fox 2000 has picked optioned Alice Hoffman's young adult novel AQUAMARINE.


The book tells the story of two girls who discover a mermaid in the pool of their local beach club. When the mermaid gets a crush on a boy working at the club, the two girls smust plot to find a way to return her to the ocean in order to save her life.


As yet, no creative talents are attached to the project.

December 29, 2003... A new fantasy project was mentioned in today's Hollywood Reporter titled AQUAMARINE. Alice Hoffman, author of PRACTICAL MAGIC, wrote the book which Fox 2000 is turning into a screenplay, and they've hired John Quaintance to author the latest rewrite for the script. The story concerns two 12-year-old best friends who find a real mermaid washed up after a severe storm in the swimming pool of an almost-deserted beach house. As the two girls try and come up with a way to get the mermaid back to the open sea, the lady with a tail begins to fall for the hunky young man who works in the gift shop -- and she wants to stay. April 30, 2004... A director has been found for Alice Hoffman's novel-turned-film AQUAMARINE which we first reported on in 2001 and again late last year. Elizabeth Allen is now attached to helm the fantasy about two teenage girls that discover a living mermaid that was washed ashore and into the pool of a beach club. John Quaintance is adapting Hoffman's novel into a script for Fox 2000.

Allen directed the short film EYEBALL EDDIE which starred SMALLVILE's Michael Rosenbaum. She's also attached to direct DRIVING WHILE INFATUATED for Fox and has another teen drama in development at Disney. [Variety]
