MTV News talked with Marvel's Avi Arad about MAGNETO and even briefly about IRON MAN.

In terms of X-MEN spinoff film MAGNETO, Arad said “Think of meeting him in [the first “X-Men” movie] as a young boy in a concentration camp. What happens to his life after the war?” The film will follow Magneto discovering “if [his powers are] real or not and the whole journey of [his] survival as a young man.”  He added, “[Some] amazing surprises that happen in his life [are in store]."

As for IRON MAN, Arad spoke highly of Robert Downey, Jr.  He stated, "I think he is Tony. He is cool, he is quick, he is sexy. Tony Stark was this guy who could get away with anything. He had this dual life and you need an amazing actor to play this dual character without superpowers. You have to be two men with one heart.”

IRON MAN will be released in May 2008, while MAGNETO looks to hit theaters in 2009.

They didn't ask him about Wolverine?

Magneto sounds a lot like what they tried to do with Hannibal Rising. Hopefully it will work out better because Magneto always seemed like a more sympathetic character than Hannibal Lecter had any right to be.

Iron Man...everything I read about that movie increases my hopes for it. I really hope they can deliver!

I think Avi Arad has the hots for Downey.

Arad's an ass. As a producer he's gonna be the one to screw Marvel characters for the sake of merchandising bucks. That's all he's in there for. He'll be the one to put tits on all the Marvel suits.

Magneto has the potential of being a good film. Notice i use the word POTENTIAL, my hopes are up for it and the WOLVIE movie but neither of them are going to stand a chance (in my opinion)

aboriginal - i COMPLETELY agree with you about Arad. The only reason he is there is to pull the dollar signs out everyones eyes and into his own pocket. The only thing he has done for a Marvel movie, creative wise, is bring Venom into SM3 (which didnt work that well) He hasnt brought any orginality to the idea's and come to find out he doesn't even know much about the characters he talks about. the only reason he is around is because he is a damn good business man, and god does he know how to make a buck

Arad is useless, they parade him in front of reporters to say the same crap about whichever movies are coming out. He had glowing praise for Elektra and Punisher, neither of which was what the fans wanted. Iron Man is showing more promise than anything else they have on the horizon. They just announced that dude from Angel is in talks to play Namor though, so they screw it up twice for every time they get it right. My vote for Thor is that they track down that dude that played the Alien Bounty Hunter on the X Files. That guy was a massive nordic badass. Brad Pitt as Cap!

fluna...the actor who should play Thor is Vladmir Kulich, who played Buliwyf, the leader of the Norse warriors in 'The 13th Warrior'.

Moz72 • May 15, 2007, 07:23pm •
Kulich also played "The Swede" in 'Smokin Aces'.

Elektra could have been so much more, but it wasn't horrible (like, say, Catwoman), and I think I'm one of the few who actually liked the Punisher film. The only problem I had with that film was the entire fight scene with The Russian, which was played for laughs -- a terrible mistake. Hell, my wife doesn't like the Punisher in comics, and she didn't mind the movie.

Scythe: The guy from X-Files? I don't know if he'd make a good Thor, but I agree he is one hell of a character actor. (I loved him in Kindred: the Embarrassment)

I object to the idea of making super hero movies for 'what the fans want'. Sometimes you have to side-step the fans and look at the source material first, trying to decide what kind of story you want to tell. Sometimes, fans get hung up on the original stories and on things which would not work in the modern times, and you have to say 'no'. A good example for this? Spider-Man 2. Batman Begins. Or hell, take a look at the Ultimate series involving Galactus and the Silver Surfer... that was nothing like what was done before, and I doubt the fans 'wanted' that, because I doubt the fans would have even considered that sort of thing. But it was damn cool, and very different.

1. I've seen approx 15 minutes of Elektra latenight on tv, I was tanked out of my tree, so I have no idea if this will remain sobrietally consistent but I actually liked what little I saw of Elektra.

(twas a Cabin scene segment. Those femme-centric scenes worked for me)

Have yet to see more than 15 minutes and see it Sober, but I liked what little I saw.

2. Magneto. What a load of shitcock from Arad.

A serious credible Magneto movie has about as much chance of being made as the guy that fingers me after a caper has of breathing without a catheter or pissing without a lung machine.

(uh shouldn't that be the other other way around? - Ed)

Not when I'm done with him, it isn't Ed.

AHAHAHAHAHA.

Magneto is so NOT going to be made.

Certainly NOT via the "credible cinema" route they're talking-up here.

They seriously expect you/moi anyone with functioning brain cells to believe that Bryan Singer's concentration camp "credibility" centering _piece_ of the 1st X-Men movie is going to be pulled out and used to center an entire Magneto movie?

Yes, quite, how shall I put this politely, ah yes, Fuck off Arad you lying sack of vomitous shite.

I'm sure they have a "serious" "credible" magneto movie planned.

Puh-bloody-lease.

I'm sure we can expect that from the franchize that hurled that "credible" "serious" cinematic gem X3 at the screen.

Ask me, this is the post-X(crement)3, "now that we tanked critically, what do we do? I know let's _pretend_ we're going to make credible films in the future!" damage-control campaign.

Which I would welcome if they EVER learned from their mistakes, but they never do, there's not enough money in "credibility" these daze, more money in pop fluff masquerading as art, as far as these short-sighted gits are concerned.

imo They will NEVER make a serious credible Magneto film under the current management.

The only way a Magneto film is getting made _at all_ as anything other than as a cartoon or as an direct-to-video, is if they go ahead and un-stall Wolverine, and it does such gangbu$ter$ at the box office., and so the studio becomes so relieved that their sphincters unclog..

..and they shit money from the Wolverine movie directly into a Magneto film.

Otherwise Magneto's never getting made.

Serious Credible Magneto Film my left (uh excuse me ..*rip* *toss into room*) ..Avi Arad's left testicle.

Here's the surprise: Magneto meets the slow aging Wolverine...who looks, and is, very much like he is now...absent his metal skeleton.

Still...I could care less about this movie!!!
