Mania Box Office Report: Iron Man 3 - World Numbers

By Robert T. Trate     April 28, 2013

Maniacs, Pain and Gain won the weekend. Last week’s big Sci-Fi film, Oblivion, fell to the second spot. Pain and Gain taking the number one spot is great for Michael Bay. That news is insignificant compared to Iron Man 3. That’s right Maniacs, Iron Man 3, is already breaking world numbers and it has yet arrive in the US (or Russia, China and Germany).

Here is Disney’s official press release:

This weekend Marvel’s IRON MAN 3 began its record-breaking rollout in 42 international territories representing 79% of the international marketplace. The film has taken in an estimated $195.3M, surpassing the $185.1M international opening weekend take of Marvel's The Avengers. The film opens in the U.S. on May 3rd.

Could we get a movie made by a U.S. company to open in the U.S. before the rest of the world please? Or at least at the same time!!! Sheesh. Oh well, my son's birthday is May 7th, which works out great for seeing all these early May blockbusters.

ponyboy76 4/29/2013 3:18:09 AM

What does it matter if it opens elsewhere before the U.S. Besides, these days a lot of Marvel movies are filmed in other countries especially  the U.K. Why shouldn't they open elsewhere first?

Saw it last night and it was really good. It definitely had Shane Black's stamp on it but that didn't take away from the essence of the movie. RDJ is still the man! The only negative is that the Easter egg at the end wasn't really very exciting or amazing.

Taking off half a day Friday for a 1pm showing of IM3.  I am trying to avoid all spoilers and all the little clips that are available online so I can see this fresh.  I'm really looking forward to seeing this one.

Dazzler 4/29/2013 4:09:22 AM

How about they all open the same day?  Duh....I don't get why they can't do that.  I get the piracy thing, but there are better answers to it than let the whole world see it before the country that makes it.

Wiseguy 4/29/2013 5:34:25 AM

Well I'm still thinking about getting tickets for the IronMan marathon, parts 1 & 2, The Avengers then part 3.

Anyway pretty impressive numbers but I still don't think it's breaking Avengers' domestic opening record but we'll see soon enough.

And with those overseas numbers I think the 1 billion mark is definitely doable.

IM3 will be setting the bar pretty high for Man of Steel. DC/Warners got a late start promoting it and that could prove to be a costly mistake. It's like that DC/Warners has no clue how to market it. If MoS falls short of IM3's numbers they're going to think twice about going forward with a JL movie.

redhairs99 4/29/2013 7:13:01 AM

For some reason, the theater closest to me doesn't have tickets on sale for IM3 until Tuesday at the earliest (they say), so I still haven't gotten my midnight tickets, but will soon enough.

As for Man of Steel, I can't wait.  Not sure why everyone says they've gotten a late start in promoting it.  The teaser came out with TDKR last summer.  Just because we haven't been inundated with 30 different TV spots and endless clips showing practically the entire film, doesn't mean they don't know how to market the flick. The way they are doing it is "teasing" us with snip-its to build anticipation.  I don't think I've ever been more pumped to see a film...maybe the SW prequels, which admittedly sucked, but I have faith in Snyder when he does comic adaptations and Chris Nolan with, well, pretty much anything.

I'm doing the same as Wiseguy, I got the marathon ticket, will see if work allow me peace and quite to enjoy movies.

karas1 4/29/2013 8:06:42 AM

This is all very interesting but what about last week's movies?  You say Pain and Gain took the top spot and Oblivion took the second spot but what about spots 3-10?  Where is the graph?  It looks like Robert zipped this up in 5 minutes without doing any of the work.
