Arrow: City of Heroes Review

Ditching the Hood

By Tim Janson     October 10, 2013
Source: Mania.com

Wait?  What?  Did I just hear Oliver Queen say he DOESN’T want to be known as the Hood anymore?  Hey Ollie!  Join the club!  As the season premiere episode of Arrow came to a close, Diggle asks Oliver by what name does he want to be known…contemplative Oliver looks down at the GREEN ARROW he is holding in his hands and the episode ends.  Of course, given DC and Warner Bros. past history I would not at all be surprised to tune in next week to hear Oliver calling himself the Emerald Archer but at least that would be a positive mood in the right direction.

Season two opens several weeks after the season one finale and the near total destruction of the section of Starling City known as the Glades by Malcolm Merlyn’s earthquake machine.  Moira Queen is in jail awaiting trial for her complicity in Merlyn’s plot, Thea (Holland) is running Oliver’s nightclub with help from boyfriend Roy Harper (Haynes) and Oliver, guilt-ridden over the death of Tommy Merlyn, has fled back to that mysterious island.  Diggle and Felicity manage to track him down and implore him to return home to help his family and his company.

Queen’s company has become the target of a hostile takeover attempt by Isabel Rochev (Glau), the VP of Acquisitions at Stellmoor International.  If all that was not enough to deal with, a gang of copycat hooded gunmen are out for revenge against city leaders and the Queen family for what happened to the Glades.  Oliver is resistant to becoming the vigilante again after Tommy’s death but is pressed into action when the gunmen kidnap Thea.  Now for all those who were rooting for the Gunmen when it came to Thea, stop it!  She’s not THAT bad.  Yes she is the TV version of whiny, clingy Kristen Stewart from the Twilight films but in small doses she plays her role effectively.

The premiere did manage to cram a lot into a short hour…Moira is in jail; her estranged husband Walter Steele has left the company and is now working for a bank; Laurel’s father Quentin has been demoted from Detective to beat cop; Oliver is now head of the company; and Felicity is hotter than ever.  After defeating Fyers and his mercenaries on the island it was assumed that the flashback sequences would end but not so.  Oliver, Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett), and Shado remain on the island as Oliver continues his training and has developed a romance with Shado.  A new group of intruders on the island is cause for concern, however.  And hopefully you stayed around until the last segment to see the debut of a brand new hero who has to save Roy from a group of thugs

Other than a lame group of antagonists, the season two premiere was exceptional.  It introduced two new major characters in the Arrow universe, put Oliver in charge of Queen Consolidated, furthered Roy’s development into Speedy or the Red Arrow, and reaffirmed Diggle and Felicity’s commitment to Oliver’s crusade and making the transition from vigilante to hero.  The continued flashbacks to the island could become tiresome but any chance to see Manu Bennett in action is a good thing.

Was the girl at the end Laurel (Dinah), or someone else? If it was someone else, is Laurel (Dinah) going to kick her ass and take her outfit from her to become the PROPER Canary?

According to Internet Movie Database, the actress is Caity Lotz, and she is playing Black Canary/Sara Lance! So, Black Canary isn't going to be Laurel yet...who knows what the future holds?

Enjoyed this new episode. I think the producers got a memo from the network saying cut out the nerdy look and make Felicity look hotter!

I'm hoping they got the message (delivered by a laughing Marvel box-office accountant) to stop making wanna-be comic book shows and make a freakin' comic book show!

Yes correct...Black Canary is going to be the missing sister of Laurel and played by Caity Lotz.  And Ya..Felicity looked amazing!

Really happy this show's back. Action scenes were intense, humor was great and the evolution of the characters was spot on.

Loved the episode. I was a little concerned at the start with him being on island, but it worked out well. I'd give it an A.

I'm all for keeping up the island flashbacks. I think they are great. Happy to see a strong start.

I was okay with him being on the island. Having just recently read the issues of the bok that led up to and just after the "One Year Later" storyline, that's right from the comics. Bad guy blows up half the town, then we jump forward to Ollie back on his island working to recuperate. I was kinda geeking that they took the story and made it that close to the book.
