Arrow: Damaged Review

Deathstroke Arrives

By Tim Janson     November 08, 2012

After sputtering a little bit like a car with wet spark plug wires, this week’s episode of Arrow hit on all cylinders and was the best since the pilot.  This was a deathly serious episode which forwarded two major series sub-plots.  After Oliver was arrested last week on suspicion of being the masked vigilante he finds himself under house arrest.  In order to kill two birds with one stone to clear his name and to stop a German arms dealer from selling a cache of automatic weapons, Oliver convinces Diggle to put on the hood while he throws a party with plenty of witnesses.

This was actually the least interesting of the three plot threats that ran though this week’s episode.  In flashbacks to the island, Oliver is captured by the mysterious soldiers whose leader wants him to reveal the whereabouts of the Chinese archer who has been caring for him.  Oliver refuses and enter Deathstroke!  The masked assassin tortures Oliver, resulting in the many scars that crisscross his body until the archer rescues him.

Meanwhile, in the side story which gets more interesting each week, Walter Steele discovers that his wife has had the yacht that Oliver and his father capsized in salvaged and hidden in a warehouse.  But why?  And why did she keep it secret from Walter?

Let’s get to Deathstroke first.  Yes it wasn’t quite the costume of the comics but it was well designed and more appropriate for live action.  While I’m not crazy about seeing Deathstroke as merely a badass henchman, we’ll certainly see more of him down the road and hopefully become one of Arrow’s arch villains.

The intrigue behind Oliver’s mother and the elite group of business she has aligned herself with is getting very interesting.  Particularly since Walter obviously is not within this inner circle and when he confronts her about the ship, she threatens him that he is in over his head.

“Damaged” had it all, action, intrigue, the introduction of a new villain, and further development of Oliver through the flashbacks to the island.  Now let’s keep it up!

OK, last night hooked me on this show.  I havent been able to see an episode all year, but did watch last night's, and it was fantastic.  Another show to add to the weekly staple.

This show has me hooked. Is it The Green Arrow? No, but it is pretty damn good. And, at least he is wearing a costume, unlike a recently concluded WB/CW long-running DC adaptation.

Oliver was trapped by the Others.  Deathstroke works for Benjamin Linus.

The chinese dude escaped from the Hatch.  Where's Desmond?

caught the beginning of the episode so will finish it later.

Ok Ive seen it.  Good episode.  More Deathstroke!  Also this show needs more boobs.  Id bang Oliver's sister.

Did someone mention boobs???

i suspect that John barrowman's character will hire Deathstroke to take out GA. Can't wait to see that match!

By the way, are they going at some point use the name Green Arrow, or Arrow, or is Ollie's alter ego going to be continuously referenced as "the Vigilante" or "The Man in the Hood"?

Has Detective Lance never bothered to read a Spider-Man comic though?  How many times did Peter Parker "prove" he wasn't Spider-Man by having someone else wear the suit?  Didn't Matt Murdock do the reverse to prove in court that he wasn't Daredevil?

Moz, he needs a Batman moment where someone asks "who are you?"  And he says "Im Arrow."  Then he'll get his name.
