Arrow returns from a one week hiatus with the first of its two-part midseason finale which introduces Central City Crime Scene Investigator Barry Allen to the cast.  A thief with superhuman strength, created by Brother Blood, breaks into an Applied Science warehouse to steal a centrifuge.  Barry Allen arrives from Central City to help investigate the crime as he has followed similar crimes in his own city.  Felicity and Allen immediately hit it off as the team up to analyze evidence found at the scene.

The previous episode ended with the double surprise of Malcolm Merlyn not only returning and being responsible for Moira Queen’s not guilty verdict, but also the shocker of him claiming Thea is actually his daughter.  He confronts Moira and demands that she reveal the truth to Thea.  Oliver goes after the superhuman thief, revealing to Felicity and Diggle that he had fought similar super-powered humans back on the island that were created with the Japanese “Miracle” formula found on the old, abandoned submarine.  His initial encounter with the masked man does not go well as he is handily defeated and only able to cut the man with is arrow but not penetrate his dense skin.

In the Island flashbacks, Shado, Sara, and Oliver are helping a badly injured Slade Wilson in search of the Sub and the formula which the help will heal his wounds.  When Malcolm again confronts Moira over Thea’s parentage, Moira reveals she has made contact with one man who can kill Merlyn…the leader of the League of Assassins, Ra's Al Ghul.  The episode ends with a cliffhanger when Oliver is gravely injured in another battle with the masked superhuman and only Barry Allen can save him.

Just a fantastic episode from beginning to end!  Arrow has been on a roll all season and continues to gain momentum.  The use of the Miracle formula introduces actual Meta-Humans into the Arrow universe and despite Oliver having been able to beat them previously on the island, he is defeated soundly twice.  Grant Gustin portrays a young Barry Allen who has come to Starling City trying to find out who murdered his mother, revealing that it, too, was a Meta-Human with super speed.  We get another Particle Accelerator hint as Barry is covering his head with a magazine during a rainstorm which asks the question on the cover “Is it safe?”  There’s also a nod to Barry Allen’s original origin when he is standing near a rack of dangerous bottles of chemicals and looks up as a bolt of lightning strikes outside during the storm.

Roy is being pushed further and further into his own vigilante persona when he tells Oliver he’ll investigate the murder of a friend with or without his help.  Moira uses the League of Assassin’s strict moral code against Merlyn to alert Ra's Al Ghul that the billionaire murderer is still alive.  Arrow continues to do an incredible job of mixing its comic elements functionally, and not just to excite comic fans with hollow references.  If anything, Arrow’s one weak point recently is glossing over details and expediting plotlines such as just how Moira Queen was able to make contact with Ra's Al Ghul so quickly but those minor quibbles don’t detract from another fantastic episode leading into next week’s mid-season finale!

Great review for a great episode. Really looking forward to next week's show.

I read somewhere that Nightwing could pop up on Arrow. Anyone else hear anything about that?

You know what was awkward?  Slade telling Ollie's girl right in front of Ollie that he had feelings for her. Bet aoie was glad Slade stared bleeding from his yes.

i thought the episode was really good, wish they kept Barry around longer.  I want to see some Barry/Felicity action.

@Samson, this show is getting alot of rumored characters so I wouldnt be surprised if he shows up specially if WB decides to tie their TV shows to the movies.  Nightwing was also rumored to pop up in MoS 2.

They are really under using Roy so far.  They really are starting slow with him.  He's still doing the wide eyed can't believe this is happening look.  Flash guy looks familar from other shows, trying to remember w/o imdb.  Was he on Smallville?

I am glad that I shunned this show early on because now that Breaking Bad is over and Walking Dead is on hiatus until next year I now have something to watch.

@DAZZLER Looked up Grant Gustin, he is a cast member on Glee

Fucking great episode.

Who didn't have a mild nerdgasm when thunder struck and Barry handling chemicals?

Fantastic episode.  Yes, Wiseguy, I nerded out at that moment, hoping it was actually going to happen.  I really liked Grant Gustin as Barry.  Not as quick witted as I expected, but maybe that'll manifest along with super speed.  My only, minor, complaint about the whole episode was the quick reveal to Barry of who Oliver is.  Couldn't they have put a towel over Ollie's head or something to at least try to keep his identity secret for a minute or two?

Dazzler - I like that they're doing the slow build with Roy.  He's becoming the disgruntled sidekick without actually being a sidekick.  Neat approach.

Fatastic episode, lots of good things setting up. Red Arrow is taking a while to develop. I thought he would have been in the "gang" by now. I was a big fan of the dress that Felicity wore... There are a lot of things going right now, Black Cannary... is she on vacation? Wouldn't she be doing more in the city? Flash, it's a great start good actor, he has a lot of character to develop. Can't believe it's  the 1/2 way point already. I want more things to happen in this year. Still curious to see if GA and Flash will crossover into the Justice League or not.

Then its unanimous (so far) - great episode!

From his seemingly miraculous recovery from last season's end, I thought Meryln was going to turn out to be Ra's al Ghul. I'm also sursided that Moira knows about the Assassin's Softball League. Are super secret ninja organizations common knowledge?

Great fight scenes as always on this show. That is sort of a prerequiste in doing a superhero show and they do a great job.

Dazzler, I think you are mistaking the Barry Allen actor for Aaron Ashmore. He played Jimmy Olsen on Smallville. Or was it his twin brother Shawn? They pop up in alot of genre shows. One of them plays Iceman in the X-men movies, one was Olsen, one was on Warehouse 13, one is on Kevin Bacon's show The Following but I can remember which.

Yeah, great episode, as usual.

I too like that they are taking their time with Roy. I don't think we need too many people in the group. Looking forward to next week.
