Definitely a stronger showing this week for Arrow. “Unfinished Business” is a sequel to “Vertigo”, the series’ 12th episode. Despite the drug dealer known as The Count being locked away in a mental hospital, the Vertigo drug is once again making its way throughout Starling City, claiming the life of a young woman who had just left Oliver’s nightclub. Oliver and Detective Lance both arrive at the hospital to find The Count to be a raving lunatic, seemingly incapable of continuing to run his drug empire. But it seems they’ve both been fooled when it’s reported that The Count managed to overpower his doctor and escape.
Lance, who already has a distrust for both Oliver and Tommy Merlyn, discovers that there is $10,000 missing from the club’s books and due to Tommy’s shady past, suspects him of possibly dealing or at least allowing dealers to use the club to sell the drug. The dead girl sent Tommy a text message the night she died despite his claims he didn’t know her. Lance goes so far as to obtain a search warrant, discovering the secret lower level that Oliver uses as his, umm…Arrowcave. Tommy however had time to remove anything that might have aroused Lance’s suspicions, making it seem like just an ordinary storage room. Despite Tommy’s timely save the incident create a rift between him and Oliver causing Tommy to quit and go to his father to see a new job. In flashbacks to the island, Oliver begins his ‘wax-on/wax-off’ style training with Shado, Yao Fei’s daughter which provides some light, humor moments this week.
While not a grand episode plot-wise, this week was notable for several key events that should have long term implications. First, this is clearly Tommy’s “turning to the dark side” moment. Despite their strained relationship in the past, Tommy seems now more than willing to follow in his father’s footsteps. It will be interesting to see if Tommy eventually succeeds his father as the Dark Archer which would likely only happen if Malcolm were killed. Or could it be Tommy who might be the one killed since he knows Oliver’s secret? What do you think Arrow Fans?
Also this week was important in the relationship between Ollie and Diggle. Diggle desperately wants to track down Deadshot who killed his brother but initially Oliver dismisses the personal vendetta. In the end though Oliver knows he needs Diggle now more than ever that Tommy has turned his back on him. The scenes between Oliver and Shado lightened things up and were a lot of fun. It gave Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett) the chance to fire off a few sarcastic comments at Ollie’s expense. I continue to be impressed at how the writers have balanced the two plotlines between present day Arrow and flashback Oliver. I thought the flashbacks might grow tired but they continue to make them interesting and of course I can’t wait until Slade finally becomes Deathstroke.
As is often the case there’s some plot contrivances that are hard to overlook…Why would the girl who died from Vertigo have had Tommy’s cellphone number? Clearly he really didn’t know her. It was just a cheap means to assert Tommy as a red herring and frankly it wasn’t necessary. Still overall a very solid episode this week.
