Maniacs, we are sorry we missed this news last week. It is pretty big news and marks the return of Brandon Routh to the DC Universe! Superman Returns star Brandon Routh has signed on to play the Ray Palmer, aka The Atom, on The CW’s Arrow. This will be a recurring role on the series.

From Variety: The Atom, in the show’s third season. His character is a scientist and inventor that will have an unexpected yet mysterious role in the lives of Oliver and Felicity.

In the DC Comics, The Atom can shrink down to subatomic size. Routh’s appearance on the show will mark the first time the character will appear in a live-action series”.

This is not the first time that one actor has played a different superhero role in the same comic book universe. See Chris Evans on Captain America and the Fantastic Four. Like Evans’, this dual role is not technically part of the same universe or medium. It will be great to see The Atom on TV as well as Routh back in action.

Arrow returns Oct. 8th on The CW.

This is not the first time that one actor has played a different superhero role in the same comic book universe. But this is a major demotion.

Definitely a smaller role.

The Atom was in The Dark Knight Strikes Back (sequel to TDKR) so maybe there WILL be a connection? Wishful thinking..

Are you working? I think Routh is happy to be able to work as an actor, not that he is needy or anything and be in a genre that he is recognized.

Good idea. But like with Firestorm coming to the new Flash show I'm wondering if they will eventually tie-in with the upcoming JL movies. Somebody said on the Firestorm comments that it is a possibility and that sounds like a good thing.

If Routh becomes the Atom in the series and goes to the JL movies they've got to do a special first meeing with Henry Cavil's Superman.

 The Awkward Atom

Also worth noting is that they have said that Ray Palmer is going to be on Arrow.  I have serious doubts that we will see him in the actual Atom persona.  I hope I am proved wrong...

I also doubt they tie Arrow & Flash into the cinematic universe.  I kind of actually want them to be separate, but I think I am in the minority on that.

What the fuck is Daybreak talking about? TDKR has nothing to do with Arrow so how the hell would The Dark Knight Strikes Back have anything to do with Arrow?

Any tie in from the CW TV universe to the DC movie universe is supposed to be dependent of the success of the Flash series, but even if it's a hit, I would imagine the connection is tenuous at best.  Honestly, so far, even Agents of SHIELD's connection to the movie universe has been strictly one way even though Marvel has released 2 (nearly 3) movies since the series debuted and, while the series has made good use of the movies, the movies have done nothing to acknowledge the existence of the show.  While it would be interesting to see how they handle it, I'd bet that there is no chance you will ever see a scene in the movies or on TV that has Brandon Routh standing awkwardly next to Hanry Cavill in a Superman costume.

I heard to make it more realistic and grounded in reality that he doesn't in fact get smaller but instead everything around him just grows larger.
