Audio & Trailer for THE NINES

By: Jarrod Sarafin, News Editor
Date: Thursday, September 06, 2007

Screenwriter, John August (Big Fish, The Corpse Bride, John Hanock, Shazaam!), has recently wrapped & released up his directorial debut with THE NINES for Newmarket Films. The film has certainly been grabbing some notice from trades such as Variety for its blur of reality and metaphysical fantasy centering on four actors but told from 3 seperate story concepts within the same movie that blend together with the same overall themes. Ryan Reynolds stars in the leading role alongside Elle Fanning, Melissa McCarthy & Hope Davis for this recent limited release.

To check out the newly released Audio Commentary for THE NINES and read John August's blog, click here.

As for the Plot Synopsis, as I said above, the film is broken down into three seperate stories with the actors playing different characters and concepts while covering the same overall theme. Here's a breakdown of those three concepts:

Gary: (Reynolds) - a TV actor who finds himself under house arrest after one too many benders.  He is tended to by an impossibly chipper publicist (McCarthy) and a sexually tempting new mother next door ( Davis ).

Gavin:(Reynolds), a show-runner who is the subject of a reality TV show about the thorny process of creating a network series (not dissimilar to August himself).  His show stars his (and August's) best friend, the actress Melissa McCarthy, much to the chagrin of the network's development executive ( Davis ).  He also happens to own the house where Gary is imprisoned (John August's actual home).
Gabriel:(Reynolds) - a successful video game designer who runs into car trouble with his wife (McCarthy) and daughter (Fanning) in the woods and then into even greater trouble when he seeks help from an attractive hitchhiker (Davis).

 Here's the trailer for it:

I think I remember seeing a trailer of a similar themed movie years ago when i saw Bubba Ho Tep . It was an indie film and it seemed like the film had all the same characters but it had the same story told in different film type like comedy, action and i think drama. don't remember the name of it though

Looks cool. I like Reynolds a lot, it's good for him to do a couple of serious roles to get him looked at seriously as the FLASH.
From a design point of view, how come every time since the movie Se7en they have to use the number character as the vowel?
If the movie has a three in it it's "Bad Things Come in THR33's" or The N9ne
No originality in designs anymore. Not since cave drawings

The trailer looked interesting enough. If it's originality that we seek, this seems to be it.

What the hell is this about??? The synopsis didn't even explain it, and the special effects look like just what they are...cheap video effects.

It looks like a pilot episode for a low budget syndicated tv show!!!

Maybe that's the point? Maybe FX aren't supposed to be the be all and end all of this movie...maybe they're designed to represnet a fragmenting mental state instead of the srystal clear, HD crap that we see in FX today?

I wouldn't say it's original, woodwraith. It seems like a combination of the Matrix and 23, but who cares as long as it's good.
I'll probably wait to rent. Doesn't seem like a big screen movie to me.

I agree with you about it not being big screen worthy, most movies aren't IMO. But I do like the premise.

Metalwater, the trailer wasn't really that hard to figure out. I showed it to my 11 year old neice, and she knew what it was about. Maybe I aught to have her explain it to you.

My first impression, prior to seeing the trailer, is: Hope Davis is "sexually tempting" or an "attractive hitchhiker"? Have you seen her?
But then the trailer clearly showed her as either an anchor to reality or the villian who does the deceiving to Reynold's character. Either way, her appeal to him is warranted, more so than him finding her physically attractive...
That being said, this is not a very original premise, true, as it smacks of David Lynch or some other metaphysical director. However, it looks interesting and watchable enough, so count me in.
