While sitting down with USA Today to discuss 3D technology, director James Cameron revealed a few things the fans may be interested in hearing. One was about the much-rumored 3D re-release of Titanic which the director confirms is planned

"We're targeting spring of 2012 for the release (of a 3D version of 'Titanic'), which is the 100 year anniversary of the sailing of the ship,"

When asked about the 3D Blu-ray edition of Avatar, Cameron threw a surprise into the mix by saying a possible re-release of the sci-fi epic may be coming this fall with extra footage.

"We're not officially announcing it right now but I'm hoping for fall. The wildcard is that we might be re-releasing the movie this fall. It's kind of gotten stomped out (in theaters) because of 'Alice in Wonderland.' The word we're getting back from exhibitors is we probably left a couple of hundred million dollars on the table as a result. The question is the appetite still going to be there after the summer glut of movies. We're going to assess that. We're talking about maybe adding in additional footage and doing something creative."

So Avatar may be back in theaters come this fall, Maniacs.

Sound off below.

Really?  A gazillion dollars isn't enough?

3D titantic?  Does this mean we're going to suffer through that craptastic Celine Dion song again?  ugh.

Who does he think he is, George Lucas? Or, maybe he'll wait and just come out with a Special Edition DVD and follow in the footsteps of Peter Jackson.

I wonder if they will actually re-release it with a good story this time.

Leo In 3D huh? I'll pass. Although...seeing that guy hit the propeller at the end in 3D might just be worth the price of admission.

geee even with the dvd release date set I guess cameron just wants a little more money to milk it for what its worth

Some new Avatar scenes might get me back in the theater to see it a fourth time.  I know it's made tons of money but a couple hundred thousand is a couple hundred thousand no matter how rich you are.  There were still people lining up and selling out IMAX theaters up until Alice pushed it out.  So it could definitely have kept raking in the dough.

I liked Titanic so I'd definitely check it out in 3D.

Wow, 3-D Titanic...you can totally feel the iceberg now.

Though the car scene wouldn't be bad in 3-D.

As to new scenes...as long as they are story related I might give it a look on BD but I saw it in theaters once and am good there.

Bring it back, extra scenes or not, many will  see it  again. I could go for another viewing after going cold turkey for a few months. The thing is they should hold off on the dvd release if they want to maximize on a re-release.

And I may go see Titanic  too if they re-release it in 3D . I've yet to actually watch the entire film anyway so it would be sort of new to me in a way. Please don't anyone tell me if the ship sinks or not

Let's not forget, guys, this also means Kate Winslet's boobies in 3D...
