It has been a while since we heard anything about Avatar and it’s sequels. James Cameron recently spoke with Play Goes Strong about 3D Films, Cirque Soleil and more importantly Avatar 2 and 3. Cameron is reportedly working in New Zealand so that he can get into the proper mind set of living in Pandora. When asked about the scope and where he drawing his inspiration from Cameron had this to say. "Oh believe me, it's not that little! It's not exactly a little, intimate drama. I'm working on 'Avatar 2' and 'Avatar 3.' I was talking the other day with Peter Jackson and said, 'You had it easy dude. You had the books when you did the second and third 'Lord of the Rings.' I have to create my own books in my head and extract a script from it. I'm deep into it and I'm living in Pandora right now. There is that start up torque where you feel it's coming to you. Then you build up momentum. That's when it gets fun. The characters talk and it's writing itself. I'm almost there right now. It's building fast." Cindy Pearlman, who conducted the interview, asked the best and probably most obvious question. Is there there any pressure to top yourself? “Pressure, no. It's a little daunting because sequels are always tricky. You have to be surprising and stay ahead of audience anticipation. At the same time, you have to massage their feet with things that they know and love about the first film. I've walked that line in the past, so I'm not too worried about it. At the same time, I definitely have to deliver the goods…As for a release date that will be determined by when I get the script out. No pressure!" If anything we know that Cameron understands what it takes to make a sequel. His follow ups to Terminator and Alien have been ear marks for all other filmmakers to follow. I was thinking the same thing so having written that I wish those people would keep their bathroom stall like graffiti comments restricted to youtube. Now, personally I can't wait to see what James Cameron has in store for A2 & A3. I'm such a huge fan of the first movie I'm really intrigued to see where he is going to take it next.
I didn't care for the first as much as the rest of the world, but Cameron can do sequels!
It shouldn't be hard to top the story from the first one seeing as how there wasn't much of one.
My guess is Jackson's reply went a little something like, "Yeah, easy. That's exactly how I would describe making three movies at the same time. Twice. Oh, and I also made Tin Tin. You're 'one movie every 10 years' schedule sounds absolutely grueling" :P
That being said, I'll be in line for 3D IMAX, or whatever version Cameron invents by then.
My big issue with the first one was, when a character justified attacking the alien community because it was the biggest deposit of (whatever the humans were after) within 300 kilometres.
300 kilometres?!?!?
They came across millions of light years of space and they can't spare a community of creatures by moving another 300 kilometres?
Weak.
Not to mention he stole his story from like...2 or 3 other well known stories that were already out there.
Still...I enjoyed the movie and will watch 2 and 3. But yeah, when you're putting down Peter Jackson because his stories were already written, and your first movie ripped off other movies previously made, and you only do 1 movie every 10 years like FrozenFear explained...yeah...he's a jacka$$. Maybe his next movie will copy Wrath of Khan mixed in with Empire Strikes Back, with a little Field of Dreams sprinkled on top.
He didn't really STEAL anyone's story. People/Aliens moving into other territories and stuff like that is a universally/historically occuring event that ANYONE can write about, or make a freaking movie about.
Just like any other vampire movie, ninja movie, action movie, or love stories which are done in 1000 different ways!! Get off that shit already!!!
Absolutely agree violater14! That said though, the story/plot in Avatar was pretty basic and predictable, so it'd be nice to see something a little more complex and interesting story-wise in the sequels. Just got the 3D blu-ray of the first movie and can't wait to see it again!
Also have to say that I would hope he was joking when he told Peter Jackson he'd had it easy, because if I was Jackson I would have slapped him for that.
He wasnt putting peter jackson down at all. They were having a conversation. Peter jackson PROBABLY agreed, becasue the statement is true
so tired of James cameron hate. he's an AMAZING director that has done so much for the film industry... not to mention the marine exploration industry....
and he didnt "steal" anything more than anybody else. there isnt a film or book made that wasnt inspired by anotyher film or book.
Though Avatar has elements that are similar to dances with wolves, so does Dune, fern gully, The Last Samurai. but the backdrop of each is what makes them unique.
star wars is "stolen" from Dune and Lensman, Dune is "stolen" from the Bible, the Bible is "stolen" from Sumerian writings such as "Gilgamesh" etc.etc.
Taking elements that connect with you and making them your own is not theft, its part of the creative process.
