B5 goes DTV

Warner Home Video has announced that the once-popular science fiction TV series Babylon 5 will return – this time on home video. WHV execs feel that the award winning series’ large cult following - which has followed it throughout its five year run on TV, as well as five made-for-TV features and a limited series - is strong enough to support direct-to-video movies.

The new movie, entitled Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, will be written and directed by creator Michael J. Straczynski and executive produced by Doug Netter, and will combine two separate stories into one movie. Bruce Boxleitner will return to his role as President John Sheridan, while Tracy Scoggins (“Capt. Elizabeth Lochley”) and Peter Woodward (“Galen”) have also signed on to the project. The story of The Lost Tales picks up several years after the events of its original story, and follows several of its major characters in new adventures set against the backdrop of the Babylon 5 universe.

This is really music to my ears. My only sadness is that Andreas will not be in any of them. He WAS Babylon 5.

Actually, Muad'Dib, you'll be happy to hear that this is not the only DVD that JMS is creating for Lost Tales. He has plans for a series of discs. He has complete creative control, he has the budget he asked for, he gets to write as much as he wants and DIRECT as much as he wants. Check out the newsgroup forums such as http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated?lnk=gschg&hl=en Where JMS posts quite frequently about his ongoing projects. Cheers!

Interesting. Normally, something like this would just make me cringe. But I love the B5 universe. I think it's good that JMS & Netter are behind it and Boxleitner will be in it. They really need to get as many original cast members as possible to give it a chance.

Not only will there be no Andreas, but there will be no Richard Biggs either. However, if they get Jerry Doyle, Claudia Christian, and Peter Jurasik back they will be well on their way to making me happy. I hope one of these stories deals with Crusade and how the virus is cured (which I understand was how the first season was supposed to end if the network didn't dick JMS over). I guess having Valen makes this a distinct possibility, but I want to see some Gary Cole too.

This news item took ages to get on here, JMS announced this months ago. But It is great to have some new B5, (I'm on my fifth run throught the entire DVD set). I want the Telepath Wars (more Lyta), some of the 'real' post virus story arc that we would have seen as JPJ #4 says. I was watch an episode with Talia, will we see the reason behind Kosh's recordings? And what happens with the thing in the cup? And bring back Marcus. We miss you Andreas and Richard, prehaps JMS will dedicate an episode to them.

It was announced months ago when Babylon 5 was first announced to be making DTV films, but this is another announcement, more formal and was just released by WB yesterday!

Muad'Dib, you should have seen this coming.

Too true. It will be a "bitter-sweet" outing without Andreas and Richard. I, for one, hope Mira Furlan signs up for this one. G'Kar is the "heart" of B5; Delenn is the "soul."

i think this show had more actor deaths (afte its cancellation) than Star Trek did. when i heard about Biggs I was shocked. He wasnt old at all.
