Babylon 5 Back on TV?

Babylon 5 was one of those series I came to late, after it already moved to DVD.  I saw the movie that started the series off and loved it but when they scheduled it for a fairly early time on Sunday nights I was just never able to catch it.  I had been out of comics for some time when a friend told me that I had to check out the revamped Amazing Spider-Man, that this new writer literally rescued the series.  So, I checked it out and sure enough my favorite comic book series had returned to what made it great to start with thanks to this writer I wasn’t familiar with J. Michael Straczynski.  I not only redeemed this comic book series but he re-stimulated my interest in comics again.  This was around six or seven years ago.  Now thanks to several other writers now writing comics for my age group I’m reading half of Marvel’s titles.  Anyway, when I heard that the guy revitalized the Amazing Spider-Man comic had been responsible for Babylon 5 I had to track down the DVD’s and again I wasn’t disappointed.  The series ran through five seasons of varying quality, some better than others, but none of them bad.  In fact I was actually thinking of revisiting the series for a retrospective.

Back during San Diego Comic Con, Straczynski mentioned that he wanted to bring the series back to life in a series of direct to DVD movies.  I thought this was very forward thinking.  This market was, and still is relegated to T&A flicks and low budget horror with a few exceptions of course.  With two cast members passed away, Richard Biggs and Andreas Katsulas, all went quiet in B5 land.  Recently, a new press statement from the Babylon 5 camp has been released stating that the production will move forward and there will be not one but a couple of Babylon 5 direct to DVD films.  Loving the series as much as I do I’m happy to hear it’s coming back but can there be a Babylon 5 without G’Kar?  It looks like Marvel Entertainment is doing fine with their animated direct to DVD films but will Warner Brothers be happy with a small payday?

A lot of stuff went into repeats this week for the holiday so big picks are pretty obvious; Prison Break and Heroes.  Prison Break ended on one of the most edge-of-your-seat cliffhangers of any show this season last week.  I hear some of you cynics out there “Oh they won’t kill off Sara, she’s a main character”, while I’m inclined to agree, they have killed important characters before.

Monday

CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING (ABC, 8pm PST)

The Peanuts gang gets together for a Thanksgiving meal in this classic cartoon.

PRISON BREAK (FOX, 8pm PST) “Disconnect”

Last week ended on a major cliffhanger with Kellerman torturing Sara so look for that to get tied up.  We’ll also get a bit of C-Note’s story too.

HEROES (NBC, 9pm PST) “Homecoming”

A lot of hype has been piled on “Save the cheerleader, save the world” and from what we know she is going to be in trouble at her homecoming.  Hiro travels back in time to save the waitress, and we get more story from Nikki too.

CSI MIAMI (CBS, 10pm PST) “Going, Going, Gone”

A 19 year old model that was bought at a charity auction is found murdered.  Apparently the “charity” event isn’t as charitable as it all seems to be tied into criminal activities.

Tuesday

NCIS (CBS, 8pm PST) “Twisted Sister”

McGee’s teen sister may be involved with the murder of a sailor on the campus of the college that she attends.

HOUSE (FOX, 9pm PST) “Whac-a-mole”

An 18 year old who is the provider for his brother and sister has a heart attack and House turns his diagnosis into a game for the staff.

VERONICA MARS (THE CW, 9pm PST) “Lord of the Pi’s”

A wealthy college trustee disappears the night before she is to cast a deciding vote on whether the college will continue using the Greek system on campus.

Wednesday

JERICHO (CBS, 8pm PST) “Red Flag”

Russian jets fly over Jericho dropping containers of food that the residents fear might be poisoned.

DAYBREAK (ABC, 9pm PST) “What If He Lets Her Go?”

Rita senses that Hopper isn’t leveling with her in version 3 of his day.  Hopper also is befuddled about a package he finds in his mailbox.

CSI: NY (CBS, 10pm PST) “Sweet 16”

A wealthy father is murdered in an expensive car he was about to give his daughter for her 16th birthday.  While searching the car Lindsay is bitten by a cobra.

Thursday

CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION (CBS, 8pm PST) “Living Legend”

The remains of a mobster who disappeared in the 70’s are discovered with a bullet hole in the skull.  Soon after a picture is found on the body of a murdered man that features the mobster, the murdered man, and another man that might be the next target.

JURASSIC PARK (AMC, 8pm PST)

A scientist and his family are brought to a remote island being run by a wealthy man who has discovered a way to resurrect now extinct dinosaurs.  As you might expect, mayhem ensues.

SPIDER-MAN 2 (FOX, 8pm PST)

Sam Raimi directs this fantastic sequel this time pitting Spidey against Doc Ock.

ELF (USA, 8pm PST)

Will Farrell plays a 6 foot tall man raised with Santa’s elves that decides to seek out his birth father in this holiday comedy.

Friday

GHOST WHISPERER (CBS, 8pm PST) “Giving Up the Ghost”

A high school baseball player is possessed by the ghost of an ex-Major League player.

NUMB3RS (CBS, 10pm PST) “Brutus”

A senator and a psychiatrist are gunned down in different locations at different times but it appears that the murders might be connected by a secret government program.

THE DAY AFTER (SCIFI, 8pm PST)

An 80’s miniseries focusing on the days leading up to a nuclear war and the immediate aftermath.

Saturday

THE CRUSH (IFC, 8pm PST)

Alicia Silverstone plays a young girl who gets obsessed with an older man leading to suspense and thrills, I guess.

OCTOPUSSY (SPIKE, 8pm PST)

A classic Roger Moore James Bond film that plays a little more comedic than previous films but still features some great action and plenty of those great Bond moments.

Sunday

SIMPSONS (FOX, 8pm PST) “I Scream of Margie (With the Light Blue Hair)”

Homer gets fired so he buys an ice cream truck.  Marge uses the piles of pop cycle sticks to create sculptures of Springfield citizens.

FAMILY GUY (FOX, 9pm PST) “Chick Cancer”

Stewie learns about adult relationships when he marries a fading actress who has moved back to her native home of Quahog.  Lois drags Peter to a chick flick and he decides to make a chick flick himself.

PULP FICTION (AMC, 8pm PST)

Quentin Tarantino’s classic film about gangsters doing gangster s#@t.  The film stars Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta and Bruce Willis.

Oh my god finally some Babylon 5 action. I was wondering if JMS has just given up on everything that was B5. I can't wait to see what these three direct to DVD movies are about. But, every B5 fan knows exactly what they're hoping for it to be...say it with me...Telepath War!

JMS if you're reading this, film a funeral for G'Kar, have the remaining cast present (much like they did when Spock died) He was loyal and appeared in ALL of the movies and even the spin off series too. start it with his funeral, intersplice with flashbacks and memories of G'Kar from both the series and movies... this was an actor that was LOVED by the fans... this was a character that was loved by the fans.

Problem is, mckracken, we've already seen how G'Kar (and Londo) die. I don't think he wants to flash that far into the future to do the funeral. Although, since G'Kar had become such a spiritual leader for his people, they could easily explain his being away from the station.

The actress who played Lochley is signed on as is Boxleitner and the guy who played Valen. If they can get Claudia Christian, Jerry Doyle, and Peter Jurasik signed on they'll be well on their way to making me happy. I wouldn't mind seeing some Gary Cole in there to clear up that whole plague situation from Crusade.

Has anyone watched Daybreak? I like Taye Diggs but I haven't given this show a chance. Is it a waste of time like it sounds, or is there something there worth tuning in for?

You know what else these comment sections need other than that edit button? We need to be able to create spaces between paragraphs. It would make things far more readable.

I second JetPackJesus on the much needed comment formatting, unformatted paragraphs make us look pedantic (are you sure it's the unformatting that make you look pedantic maelstrom? - Ed) Go Away Ed --- Although odds are (as you intimate) that B5-to-DVD wouldn't result in a terribly large pay-day they might just make enough money to spur interest in a big B5 theatrical release movie. id est. Firefly only had a handful of TV episodes before it was cancelled, yet the DVD sales of the TV series were so good that it ultimately led to the FF movie: Serenity.

and although Serenity did not fare very well in the theatres, it once again, took off in DVD sales.

Bottom line, new Firefly was made, and money was made. Everyone is happy.

The same thing ought occur with Bablyon-5 DVD films, I suspect at the very least they will make more money than is invested (though please don't skimp on FX budget imo, it must at least look en par with the TV series, see Star Trek 5 for what happens if it looks sub-par) but more to the point, AISI if any TV based SF is capable of hitting it big time and launching a franchise, it's Bablyon-5. It already has some of the best writing in television SF. It's a matter of taking steps (such as direct-2-DVD outings) that ultimately lead to where you really want to go: the putting together of a big B5 theatrical movie that showcases what made this series great --> to a larger contemporary audience.

I love BSG's R. D. Moore, but J. Michael Straczynski was there first with Bablyon-5, and deserves his recognition and shot at the big time too. In my view.

I always wished they had kept Stewart Copeland for the music, his work for the first movie I thought perfectly fit the world of B5. But in any matter it is good to have it return in any form.

Wherever I read about this before, it stated that JMS had been given the budget he wanted and free reign with the projects. This info was based on one of JMS's internet posts about the project. I assume the budget will be well over what is needed to surpass the series FC (very suibpar today). The free reign is great news because it means we won't have anyone doing what TNT did to Crusade. I still haven't decided which was more absurd treatment, TNT with Crusade or Fox with Firefly. Both aired out of order, including the pilot not first. TNT did make them change costumes midway through production and even cancelled the show before it ever aired. Fox didn't air all the episodes though. I think if this isn't a push, then the slight edge goes to TNT and their dicking over Crusade.

I dunno. I think that they ended the series, and the universe to a degree fine.

Though the telepath war would be nice
