Babylon 5 Finally

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Monday, June 18, 2007

One of the first things I wrote about for TV Wasteland last year was that a new Babylon 5 series of direct to DVD films were in the works. Now, finally 10 years after the original series ended the next tales of Babylon 5 will begin on July 31st with Babylon 5: The Lost Tales Voices in the Dark. When I first heard about the film I had hoped the story would have the epic feel of a theatrical release. After checking out the description it appears to be more along the lines of a two hour episode, which for “good” B5 means something better than most other similar sci-fi series. A trailer has been released for the film that features narration that could have been lifted right from the original series. Seeing the characters and hearing that over-the-top narration felt like I ran into an old friend. I really hope the film is good. I’m disappointed to see a few missing cast members. Of course sadly since Richard Biggs and Andreas Katsulas passed away they don’t appear in the film other than via some brief archival footage but also Mira Furlan isn’t back, probably because of her work on a little television series called LOST, and neither is Claudia Christian, but she doesn’t appear to be doing anything that would conflict. I know there were some real issues between B5 creator J. Michael Straczynski and Jerry Doyle after the original series ended and Doyle tried to restart the franchise himself and got the fan base in an uproar thinking something was happening that wasn’t meant to be at the time but couldn’t they bury the hatchet to get these new films made? How do you have a B5 without a wise cracking Garibaldi? Instead of these great actors we get Tracy Scoggins back reprising a character I never liked to start with. Bruce Boxleitner is of course back as is the fantastic Peter Jurasik and some other actors return for supporting roles. At any rate head on over to the official site and check out the trailer, then tell me what you think.

Shows I’m most looking forward to this week are John from Cincinnati, The 4400, and HEXJohn from Cincinnati continues to grab me with the utter bizarreness of the series. I don’t think there’s another series on television right now that has nearly as many strange characters as this one. HEX continues to be a fun watch and I’m hoping the new season of The 4400 is as strong as the previous ones. I’ll be watching some other series but the ones above have the most potential to actually be good.

Stan Lee's "Harpies" sounds nothing like "Army of Darkness".

Yeah, and "Ice Ice Baby" wasn't a rip off of "Under Pressure".

I love Hex, but I gotta I've been a little iffy on the Ella/Malachi story. It seems like a rehash of the fist season's story. Only the bad boy is not nearly as complex or as credibly devious as his daddy was last season. And unlike the new to the supernatural and in over her head young woman from last season, Ella should really know better, especially considering she knws first hand how it ended with said woman.

Maybe it's just that Azaezel was cool on cool, and Malachi looks like he's more likely to start a boy band than take over or destroy the world.

I do like the woman who plays Ella though and she manages to sell the angst, even if she should know better. I also like the ominous old dude working behind the scenes. And I'll trust the writers to give us a suitably twisted twist to distinguish it from the previous story. specially as long as the Thelma story going strong.

(Last weeks ep is still unveiwed on my Tivo so my the twist is already on.)

Going back Thelma: the love lorn lesbian ghost, and her story line have never been better. Her current pain and conflict over lossing the only love that might work for her circumstances slipping through her fingers is made palpable by Jemima Rooper, the actress playing her.

So, despite that one misgiving it still has some excellent qualities and isl probably the best genre show currently running.

Being out of town put me behind on John From Cinnitati but i'm looking forward to seeing it. That Flight of te Conchords looks pretty funny. Meadowlands on Showtime might be worth a check too.

And I'm really looking forward to Eureka's return.

As for B5, Tracy Scoggin's character was okay, she was never a good substitute for Susan Ivanova, brilliantly portrayed by Claudia Christian, and far better written than Scoggin's characte by J Michael Strazinski.

Still gotta love Londa and it'll be goodto see more Sheridan, though a bit sad that Dellen won't be there.

I'll check it out.

And once again, Stargate gets no love.

THIS IS THE SERIES FINALE OF SG-1!

And the season finale of Atlantis.

Maybe Mr Lackey doesn't like these shows but you'd think the last episode of a program that's been on for 10 years would deserve a special mention, wouldn't you?

I really enjoyed last night episode of the 4400 and The Dead Zone. The Dead Zone killed off a main character while the 4400 are finding out the consequences of giving everybody special abilities. Plus, there was that terrific Star Wars edition of Robot Chicken. I loved the part where Darth Vader throws Jar Jar Binks out of the airlock. Then, Jar Jar's ghost comes back to annoy Vader more. Very funny.

The B5 movies are not real movies and more like Lost episodes. They planned the movies the way they did because actors died and they knew they couldn't get everyone back. i have faith.

Can't wait for B5 anything, its a real shame the two two actors that died, both were great characters, and G'kar was very memorable. You would think Delen would still find time to do this, looking forward to it.

Actually there are plans for a Garibaldi Lost Tale (the script is completed and submitted) but they’ve been pushed to the second DVD release (assuming this one does well enough to justify further DVDs).

I saw the BBC presentation of Hex, and after the first season, the only thing that really kept me coming back was the nudity. I liked the first series (season) well enough, but the second was pretty subpar.

The fact that BBCAmerica is editing out the boobs and some of the language gives me absolutely no incentive to watch it again.

Dito karas1...Ten seasons, and a succesful spin off and no special mention. But thats just Stargate, the Rodney Dangerfield of sci-fi.
