April 30, 2004... Billy Bob Thornton is attached to star in a remake of THE BAD NEWS BEARS for Paramount Pictures. The movie would see Thornton take on the role that Walter Matthau played in the 1976 film, that of a little league baseball coach that turns a team of misfit kids into a contender. September 9, 2004... SCHOOL OF ROCK helmer Richard Linklater has signed to direct the remake of THE BAD NEWS BEARS for Paramount Pictures. The studio has now scheduled to start filming the picture in late November for a mid-2005 release date.
Billy Bob Thornton will play the part of the little league coach, the role that Walter Matthau originally played in the 1976 film. Thornton's character will transform a team of underperforming troublemakers into a little league world series contender. The script is by BAD SANTA scribes Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. [Variety.]
October 25, 2004... Greg Kinnear will star opposite Billy Bob Thornton in the remake of THE BAD NEWS BEARS. Both industry trade magazines were reporting the Kinnear casting news today but not what his character will be in the film.
Meanwhile, auditions for the film's young baseball players have been taking place throughout various cities across North America. Casting agents are trying to find child actors with baseball skills for roles in the film.
Richard Linklater (SCHOOL OF ROCK) will start filming the BEARS picture in baseball's off-season beginning next month. The film will come out sometime in 2005. [The Hollywood Reporter, Variety.]
November 1, 2004... Marcia Gay Harden has joined Billy Bob Thornton and Greg Kinnear in the remake of THE BAD NEWS BEARS. The Oscar-winning actress will play a legal attorney who is the one that talks Thornton's character into coaching the down-on-their-luck little league team in question.
Harden can be seen on the screen this season in the fantasy/romance P.S. She's also had roles in WELCOME TO MOOSEPORT, MONA LISA SMILE, MYSTIC RIVER and POLLOCK, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2001.
Variety reports that the first day of filming is scheduled two weeks from today, November 15. [Variety.]
