Hollywood Reporter says that Christian Bale is ready to jump on board Michael Mann's next flick. PUBLIC ENEMIES will be a crime drama, based on the Brian Burrough's book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43. Johnny Depp has been attached for a few weeks now, ready to play John Dillinger while Christian Bale is now in negotiations to play F.B.I's legendary Melvin Purvis, who led the manhunt on the criminal.
Mann penned the screenplay and will be producing alongside Kevin Misher. Robert De Niro and partner Jane Rosenthal, who originally optioned this book, will be executive producing. Production will get rolling later this winter in Chicago.
The trade says the job is not expected to conflict with Bale's commitment to play John Connor in Terminator Salvation:The Future Begins.
Plot Concept: An adaptation of Brian Burrough's book "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43," the story follows the government's attempt to stop the criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. Melvin Purvis led the manhunt on John Dillinger and captured more public enemies than any other agent in FBI history.
