Hollywood Reporter says that Christian Bale is ready to jump on board Michael Mann's next flick. PUBLIC ENEMIES will be a crime drama, based on the Brian Burrough's book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43.  Johnny Depp has been attached for a few weeks now, ready to play John Dillinger while Christian Bale is now in negotiations to play F.B.I's legendary Melvin Purvis, who led the manhunt on the criminal.

Mann penned the screenplay and will be producing alongside Kevin Misher. Robert De Niro and partner Jane Rosenthal, who originally optioned this book, will be executive producing. Production will get rolling later this winter in Chicago.

The trade says the job is not expected to conflict with Bale's commitment to play John Connor in Terminator Salvation:The Future Begins.

Plot Concept: An adaptation of Brian Burrough's book "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43," the story follows the government's attempt to stop the criminals John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. Melvin Purvis led the manhunt on John Dillinger and captured more public enemies than any other agent in FBI history.

I remember when this came out years ago and was called The Red Shoe Diaries.

Sounds pretty cool. I like crime dramas, especially with talent like Bale, Mann, and Johnny Depp.

Pretty sweet. How can a movie with Bale, Depp and Mann dealing with crime go wrong?

Sounds like a good old fashioned gangster flick, reminds me of the Untouchables. I can't wait to see Michael Mann's vision of the 1930's, his directing is always so attentive to detail and authentic.
If the movie follows the real life story of Dillinger this should be a great movie, and Depp was a great casting choice. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dillinger)

Talk about an actor in hot demand. Anybody remember the days when Bale was pretty much That Guy? I'm talking about American Psycho, Shaft, etc (basically pre-Batman). I'm not complaining in the slightest here because I happen to like Bale a lot, and things sure look good for him for the foreseeable future.

Yeah, rgtchtiger. Does Bale have some bills to pay? Putting a kid through college? Buying an island? I think he's trying to catch up with Samuel L. Jackson as the hardest working man in Hollywood.
This movie has great written all over it.

dude, Samuel L. Jackson takes on any role they offer him regardless of what the hell it is.

Bale doesn't do that., bale does like 2 films per year.

This movie sound like it will kick ass. Depp and Bale in the same movie? Chicks will have conniption fits.

This defiantly on my 'Must See" list now.

So true hanso. Bale is much more careful when picking roles. He works a lot but with the exception of that Dragon movie a few years back, all good stuff. Sam quickly went the Michael Caine route. Incredible talent that'll do anything for a paycheck.
Talent on this baby is huge and the subject matter is fascinating. Can't wait. Well. I mean I can but...
