The fellow comic fanatics over at Superhero Hype will be on the set of THE DARK KNIGHT later this week and when they publish the information from it, I'll happily pass it along for everyone. For now, though, they had a chance to talk with the leading star Christian Bale on the circumstances of filming the caped crusader this time around as compared to last time. Obviously, the Nolans and Bale had a lot more pressure in the pre-BATMAN BEGINS days when so many people had nightmares from the  BATMAN & ROBIN fiasco.

"It's been a lot easier because of that," he told us. "People aren't questioning, 'Are they going to do it or not?' There's been an acceptance of, 'Yes, these guys know what they're doing' and also, because we got so familiar with each other... it's now the third movie that I made with Chris (Nolan) and Michael Caine. I've gotten to know everybody. We all know how we all work. It's like my 5th movie with the D.P. It just flies along because there's no question in trying to sort of work each other out at all. We all know how we like to do it, and there's a nice shorthand between us all in terms of communication."

On the THE DARK KNIGHT surpassing the success of BATMAN BEGINS?

"Yes, you must, you have to do that. If we're just doing the same, then what's the point? There are people who should demand that, but it does get better, so we have to do that. That would be the death knell, wouldn't it? If we all got complacent, just said, 'Oh, we just have to bang out the same thing we did before.' Sure, we use the strengths, and we're not going to discard the things that worked, but we've got to move forward as well."

The next installment of the BATMAN franchise hits theaters everywhere next summer. The cast for TDK is Christian Bale (Batman), Heath Ledger (The Joker), Morgan Freeman (Lucius Fox), Michael Caine (Alfred), Gary Oldman(Gordon), Aaron Eckhart (District Attorney Harvey Dent), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Rachel Dawes), Eric Roberts, Anthony Michael Hall & Nestor Carbonell.

Update (6:34 am CST): A scooper has informed Superhero Hype that the production team has been working around the old Post Office building in Chicago once again yesterday and today. They've also put up the Gotham City Bank sign as well. Maybe this translates into "reshoots" for the Nolans.

That cast is out of this world. Whew! Too much.

*having a fan-boy meltdown*

The only question remains, will this follow the sequel trend with comic to film adaptions.... Spiderman 2, X2, Blade 2, even FF 2 all were a cut above the first installments.... here's hoping that continues in this case, it sure looks like it will.

Yeah, in all honesty I can`t think of a negative so far as far as the movies progress. ( maybe the Batpod). They all seem to be hitting on all eight cylinders. I am stoked for this and Iron Man next year.

Why does it always have to be bigger. I think movie directors and producers always try to top tha last one and they end up ruining a good thing. I'm not saying I want the same frickin movie as the last one, but it worked so why try to go a notch higher. Just give us a good story and I'll be happy. They tried to make the last round of Batmans bigger each time and look what that got us. Total Crap.

In some aspects, a sequel should be over the top. Think back after Tim Burton's BATMAN was produced, yeah sure it was a phenomenal hit, for that time. When Tim Burton did BATMAN RETURNS (1992), it was pretty much kept to the same formula, the only difference was: When Burton's BATMAN made mucho dinero for Warner Bros., He was granted more "artistic" freedom with Batman Returns, and less "final" decision-making from Gurber & Peters, respectively the producers from the first Batman.

When BATMAN FOREVER came out in summer of 95'...Many, many opinions varied, some good, some not so good, in particular because Burton bowed out and Joel Schuemacher, respectively, took over the reigns...Remember, Schuemacher was the one who directed St. Elmos' Fire...Yeah, Batman Forever made it's money, for that time, and WB allowed Schuemacher to direct BATMAN & ROBIN, which everybody knows, Sucked real bad! A third of that film's budget was Schwarzenegger, sorry, I mean Govener Schwarzenegger's salary...Funny, thing about it was George Clooney was STILL under contract with WB to portray the caped crusader's further adventures after Batman & Robin...Well, I for one am glad that WB waited eight years to revitalize the Batman franchise...The Dark Knight will be a hit next summer, over the top or not.

I'm psyched for this and think it'll be great but I agree with you almostunbiased, why does it (sequels in general) have to be 'bigger' to be better? Nolan's a very thoughtful filmmaker so I'm not too worried this time out. And yeah, it's a superhero comic book movie so it needs action - but emphasis should be on story. The majority of fans are there because they love & respect the characters. Batman Returns was certainly 'bigger', but it was a complete rehash & a mess in my opinion.
This should/could be 'bigger' or more over the top because that's pretty inherent with the Joker as the villain I suppose. But hearing Bale worry about making it 'bigger' does give me a slight case of the "aw, crap"s. My hopes are that 'bigger' means better character development & interactions.

I'm not worried about "moving forward" with Batman. I read that as continual evolution of the character, and a ratcheting up of pressure on him. That's what good writers do. It's tempting to fall in love with a character, and give him (or her) feel good scenes, but what really works is to establish a great character, and keep "screwing with him," as my wife (a writer) puts it.
I trust Nolan to keep making life harder and harder for Bats, and we will get to enjoy watching how our hero deals with new crises.

Looking forward to this.

Adding my voice to the "why does it have to be BIGGER AND BETTER" crowd.

Give me another movie of about the same quality, with a similar feel, but its own theme and unique story, and I'm content. It can even be "not as good" (GASP) as the previous installment, but as long as it follows in the same vein and it entertains me, I'm a happy movie viewer.

I'm gonna have to agree with Merin on this one. As long as they don't go backwards, (i.e. from Burton's Batman to Schuemacher's Batman & Robin) then I have no worries about The Dark Knight. I think Chris Nolan is the perfect director for Batman and I think he found the best actor to play Batman. Can't wait until this comes out next year!

I have no worries about this movie. I really like the "realism" Nolan is bringing to the Batman mythos. I don't think sequels have to be bigger to be better, but rather deeper. The best sequel ever (IMO), Godfather II, was so good because it went deeper into the characters. The same could also be said for "Empire Strikes Back" I think, which was another terrific sequel. I even thought "Batman Returns" did a good job in that regard. I think Nolan and company want to raise the bar not with explosions and action pieces, but with character, and I think Joker's story arc is going to bring that element to the movie naturally.
