Bandai Announces April Titles, Cancels Others

By Chris Beveridge     January 30, 2009

Bandai Entertainment has sent out their latest mailer to talk about their April 2009 release slate and it's one that's certainly going to contain both good and bad. On the good side, Freedom is getting its DVD release at long last and at a really low price all things considered. On the bad side, there are some delays (possibly attributed to the change over to Technicolor for replication) and some cancelations. On the delay side, Gundam Seed Destiny Collection 2 Anime Legends Edition has sunk back to a 04/21/2009 release from its original 02/24/2009 release. The latest Wolf's Rain Anime Legens Perfect Collection has also moved back frmo its original 02/24/2009 release to 04/07/2009.

The most damaging news for collectors though is that the release of Lucky Star Vol. #6 has had its limited edition SKU canceled outright. While the mailer says delayed indefinitely, the email solicitation has listed it as outright canceled. The limited edition was set to contain the Misoji Misaki CD, Motteke Sailor Fuku Re-mix 001 CD and the Cheerleader Uniform T shirt. The LE also was done with a special set of covers, which could introduce some headaches for collectors who want consistency unless Bandai releases the regular edition with a reversible cover.

Also noted is that the Gurren Lagann Best Sound CD release planned for 03/17/2009 has now been outright canceled as well, though it will show up included in the Part 3 release of the DVD series.

Seriously I'm going to be extremely displeased if they don't include the crayon cover some how... I didn't waste my money on the LE's just for the covers to have them yank the rug out from under me. Hell if I knew that much I could have saved a bundle and just forgo having matching covers after buying the first LE, but it mattered to me!

Very disappointing.

I understand that there may be financial reasons for canceling Lucky Star LE #6. However, I hope Bandai is also factoring in the impact of a loss of consumer confidence in their products. I would be more sympathetic to Bandai if they had stopped offering LE at, for example, Volume 3. But canceling the last LE volume creates a bad feeling. Especially since this comes after the technical disk problem in Volume 4 for which Bandai is not offering replacement disks.
