The Manic Maniac: Superman vs. Everybody - Aug 21, 2008 - 07:25am
Yeah, I don't understand why everyone "hates" Superman Returns so much. I loved the film. A lot of people complain about not enough of action, but look what happened to X-men 3, that was all action and it sucked balls. Bryan Singer is a director who does very well at developing character films, look at his resume, (Apt Pupil, Usual Suspects, X-men 1 and 2) and that's what he did with Superman Returns. He strikes the right balance between character and action. The only flaw in that movie is the obvious retread of Donner's Superman, which I honestly didn't mind that much. And if you've read Superman vs Hollywood, then you know about all the other scripts that WB was entertaining since 93, and let me tell you..they are awful, it's all action and campy and comic-ey and compared to them, Superman Returns is outstanding. The reasons why Spiderman 1 and 2, X-men 1 and 2, Batman Begins and TDK, Superman 1 and 2, hell even Blade , and I imagine Watchmen, are regarded as great films or adaptations because they perfectly capture the essence of their comics and the characters in them and keep it somewhat grounded in reality and not making it too campy, outlandish, or fantastical. They are plenty of bad comic films that have been made by an attempt to make it more like the comics (Supes 3 and 4, Batman 3 and 4, the old Captain America, FF 1 and 2 I know they weren't like the comic but they just sucked ..just to name a few). And the essence of Superman is about being the only one left on this planet and being alone and having all this power, and this messiah issue and paralleling Christ. And I think Donner's Superman and Superman Returns captures that pretty damn well. It was both entertaining and I felt that it was emotional as well. There were plenty of scenes that were emotional and heart-warming for me while watching Superman Returns. They could have played up the power struggle a little more and the god complex but they only have so much time. Bryan Singer, and his writing team, I think have proven that they can faithfully adapt a comic into a film. I would much prefer a film like Superman Returns over some constant action piece with no character development. And also, there hasn't been a Superman movie since Supes 4 in 87 or 88, so the studio and everyone involved had big shoes to fill in terms of faithfully bringing Supes back to the big screen again for new audiences and a new generation to get people interested again and to get money flowing back into the franchise instead of constantly losing more....and I think they did it. They did manage to bring Supes back again for new people pretty damn well and create interest. I mean, the fans who know and love Supes have had our desires filled in the interim with good Supes tv, with the animated show, and Justice League 1 and Unlimited...and sure I'll throw in Smallville. So we've gotten used to good quality Supes television that can easily bring the comic feel and comic stories to the table but I think we forget how difficult it is to bring all that to the big screen, and being so used to all that, it's no surprise you're not happy with the way Superman Returns turned out. I think if they actioned up the next Superman movie, and tried to make it using more elements from the comic, you'd end up with a big cgi mess and no one likes that and wants that. It'd be like FF or something, which tried but didn't quite do it. Plus, Superman doesn't have a great rogues gallery of villians that translate that well to the big screen. They are awesome for television because television has the room to do stuff like that, but it doesn't work too well when you try to translate it over. So I for one, enjoyed how Superman Returns turned out and hope the next one is just like this one but , and i do agree, with a tad more action that doesn't subtract away from any of the character delevopments and struggles, and maybe something a little less Donner mimiced.

I understand the need and desire for automation and I support that, I just still think there are a few kinks that need to get worked out. I myself have never had a problem with the spelling issue and not getting credit because I actually paid attention to the details of the article where it explicitly said it needs to match IMDB exactly.
And..actually..you can see the answers when you aren't logged in. If you get it wrong, it says incorrect and gives no points. If you get them right, it actually reveals the answer and awards the points. This is all without being logged in. It's been that way since the main trivia started.
Can anyone else back me up on that? Or does everyone like that it does that now?
Also, I think you should allow logged in users who have already submitted to see the answers again after they've submitted. Sometimes I've submitted and then forgotten what the ones I've missed were and wanted to log back in to look at them but then I can't. That should be fairly easy to implement and maintain non-spoilererity answer-wise.

at the very least, you should do something to curb the cheating. It's too easy to just keep making guesses until you get it right. I don't trust any of those guy's constant perfect scores, except for maybe saucymi since he seemed to do it during the beta. I liked the 2nd round of shots for lesser points to help after the 1st round better. It made it more fun. I know it doesn't work well for automation, but what was wrong with emailing you. Just require only one email submission per member...or something like that to cut the number down.
