BARBIE & KEN: THE ADDAMS FAMILY GIFTSET

America's favorite doll goes creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky in this Collector Edition boxed set from Mattel.

By Dan Cziraky     June 10, 2001

Yes, Barbie & Ken have gone creepy, kooky, mysterious, spooky, and altogether 'ookie' on us with this deluxe 'Collector Edition' boxed set. The pair have traded in their normal, oh-so-trendy togs for the macabre ensembles of Gomez and Morticia, cartoonist Charles Addams' delightfully dizzy, literally moonstruck lovers. As Gomez, Ken sports a navy-and-white pinstripe suit, white shirt, and black tie, with gold watch chain, black socks, and Italian loafers. His rooted hair is permanently slicked back, and his moustache and sideburns are painted on, as well as none-too-subtle age lines on the normally youthful face.

As Morticia, Barbie is not only a Goth-girl dream, but she looks enough like the late Carolyn Jones to spur a lawsuit! She's encased in a black sheath dress with chiffon flares at the wrists and spidery tendrils at the hem. Her raven hair falls straight, almost reaching her waist. She has a faux garnet pendant with matching wedding ring, and long, red fingernails. Her extreme eye make-up, ruby lips, and exaggerated pallor complete the look of Morticia.

The gift set box is a real treat, too, as the pair are packaged against a backdrop of the Addams mansion. On the back, there's a great picture on the pair in a stylized cemetery, with text about the Addams Family history (very light on facts--this set is obviously aimed at those who already know everything about the Addams clan). Doll stands are included, but aren't labeled with the characters' names (boo!). Now, I fully expect Mattel to come out with a Pugsley and Wednesday set, using the Tommy and Kelly dolls. Yeah, we should see them right around the time that Lurch, Uncle Fester, and Granny three-pack come out. Well, you can always chop off a G.I. Joe's hand and make Thing yourself!
