Well looks as if James Spader’s Ultron won’t be the only villain in Avengers: The Age of Ultron. Variety is reporting that Thomas Kretschmann (NBC’s Van Helsing on Dracula) has been cast as Baron Wolfgang von Strucker. Baron Wolfgang von Strucker has been affiliated with both the Red Skull and HYDRA in the past. It will be interesting to see how Joss Whedon incorporates him into the sequel. In Joss we trust!

Who is Baron Wolfgang von Strucker? According to “Born in the late 19th century to a noble Prussian family who had relocated to Bavaria following the Franco-Prussian War, Wolfgang von Strucker became a Heidelberg fencing champion, and was disfigured by facial scars. Strucker fought for Germany during World War I, during which he first encountered the jewel "Momentary Princess," which was fated to appear and disappear at regular intervals of time. Wolfgang pursued the jewel in the decades that followed. When Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany in 1933, Baron Strucker joined the Nazi Party, becoming infamous in the following years. In 1936 he and Geist, one of Hitler's top men, allied themselves with the Egyptian mentalist Amahl Farouk-secretly the Shadow King-in an attempt to dispute the lineage of England's royal family and install a new king who would be sympathetic to the Nazis. Their plot was thwarted by the Canadian adventurer Logan and the time-traveling members of Excalibur, Kitty Pryde and Phoenix (Rachel Summers). In 1937, Strucker was sent to the United States to assassinate Senator Fulton, but he was foiled by brigand-for-hire Dominic Fortune”. Read the full Biography here on

Uh, I don't know anything about this villain so, uh, I have nothing to say.

Personally, I think he is more of a second tier villain. More of threat in the seventies Cap comics. Now just a baddie for second or third tier heroes.

I read he'll only pop in the beginning, and will set up Scarlett Witch & Quicksilver.  Also, I like how when they add characters to this movie everyboy is like "it's cool" but if spider man or superman has multiple villains/characters then its like "this is horseshit!".  Gotta love the internet.

He will also probably set up for Cap 3.

Hanso, I think it's because Joss is known for weaving multiple characters successfully, Avengers being a great example. It's partially due to his TV background, which demands it. Whereas with Spidey, I think a lot of peeps are scared of what happened in the past with Spiderman 3.

Agreed Robert, def a second tier villain. I'm sure he's not going to be a major focus, probably a vehicle to introduce characters or move the story along. Maybe set up a situation for Cap 3. Or Shield tv show? I dunno.

Unusual choice.  he's pretty much first tier Robert, having been the founder and premiere leader of HYDRA, but is chiefly the arch-nemesis of Nick Fury and SHIELD.  He's fought Captain America and pre-Wolverine Logan a few times but I can't really remember any direct involvement against the Avengers themselves.  Ironmaniac is right, I think he'd be more suitable for Agents of SHIELD or Cap 3, or the Nick Fury movie if they get that made.

Think of the potential for a Red Skull reference. I'm looking forward to how Joss Whedon and Marvel work this character.

If they could work out Arnim Zola, then they can do Baron Strucker.

Hanso, I agree. Avengers can have 25 characters... the others should only have 2? Doesn't make sense.

Ironmaniac, I would also agree about Joss and his skills.

I think the other reason people may be ok with multiple villians in Avengers is because you have multiple heroes where as with Spiderman you only have Spidey and it would be pretty exhausting for Spiderman to try to fend off a ton of villians all at once. I'm not saying it can't be done and be done well with a single superhero Ex: Batman I'm just saying that it can be quite difficult to pull off on the big screen.
