If the box office numbers turn positive for Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, there could be a sequel or a prequel hitting theaters sometime in the future. With his WWII action film poised to premiere at Cannes in a few days, the director has revealed to the New York Times that he has a prequel half-written and has also put thought into a potential sequel storyline.

“The Basterds don’t have the luxury of being soldiers,” he said. “They have the duty to be warriors, because they’re fighting an enemy that’s trying to wipe them off the face of the earth.”

Mr. Tarantino, who was born in Tennessee, said his childhood revenge fantasies centered more on the Ku Klux Klan. “But it’s all the same,” he said. “Once the Basterds get through with Europe, they could go to the South and do it to the Kluxers in the ’50s. That’s another story you could tell.”

Not to mention a shelved subplot about African-American soldiers stuck behind enemy lines. “I have a half-written prequel ready to go if this movie’s a smash,” he said.

You can check out his reasoning behind misspelling the title and what went down in the run-up to production by clicking here.

Plot Summary: "Inglourious Basterds" (sic) begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.

Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own...

Inglourious Basterds will hit theaters August 21, 2009.

I'm a Tarantino fan but he knows or should know that less is more. Stop it with all this talk at least until the film has been released.

This movie is on my must-see-in-theater list but you are right Wiseguy. He hasn't done a sequel to any of his other movies (I count the Kill Bills as one movie). I don't know why he would do one for this one.

Wiseguy 5/12/2009 8:42:03 AM

monkeyfoot, I count Kill Bill as one film too since it was decided after the fact to split in two. The only sequel or prequel I should say I wanted was a story with the Vega brothers but I think their too old and it's too late for that.

Are u guys crazy?? It's QUENTIN TARANTINO. the ultimate writer/director. Remember he gave us Resevoir dog, Pulp Fiction, Kill BillS, etc...... If he thinks this movie is good enough to start writing a prequel to, then LET HIM. ALL that means is that these movies are gonna be the SHIT!!

VIOlater, remember, Tarantino also gave us Jackie Brown and Death Proof.  Both as pretty hard to watch.  I do want to see this film, but why do a Prequel?  At this stage, if you're already thinking prequel, then you've probably thought about it quite a while ago too.  So why wouldn't you do the Prequel idea first and then do this film as the sequel?  It's just freakin' backwards.

Even though they ended up being terrible, at least there was a 20 year difference between making the first Star Wars film and then making the prequel trilogy.  The story that Lucas had originally was what he made.  Then, after 15 years, he said, "Ya know, I feel like telling the story of Darth Vader's fall into Darkness.  Plus, it'll make tons of cash and piss off every geek in the universe."

I liked Death Proof and Jackie Brown.

Quentin Taratino has never made a sequel or a prequel. Look through his entire body of work and the closest you will come is Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction existing in the same fictional universe. The only connection between them being that Mr.Blode aka Vic Vega is the brother of Pulp Fiction's Vincent Vega. If he wants to do a prequel to Inglorious Basterds it will be something special. The reason to do a "prequel" is to give the new story the feeling of Greek Tragedy (Darth Vader)or to do an exploration of why a character is the way he is (Kirk in Star Trek).

Reading the original article, in context, Tarantino's comment about a "half finished" prequel seems like a casual, "off-the-cuff" remark not an official declaration. In context he seems torn between directing a scene and answering questions. I doubt anything will come of a this.

Quentin isn't that great a director nor a writer, his films all of them are bad in a way. I stopped watching them years ago since he is really bad at what he does.  He left High School and found his way into Hollywood, the biggest mistake he has ever done.

When I watched Plup Fiction, I knew it would be bad and it was, way too much violence and more than enough swearing for a life time. Like come on, get kicked out of Hollywood all ready, all he's good for is bad dialog and a waste of space movie trash. I knew he was crazy to begin with, but this takes the cake, way too many prequels and stop rebooting everything in sight. The only thing I truly enjoyed seeing as a remake was the new Friday the thirteenth, and a few other horror films

Sounds like someone else needs to probably go back to high school to learn proper grammar.
