Stephen King has made an official announcement that he and Adam Alleca (writer of Last House on the Left) have adapted “Cell” for the big screen. “Cell” was King’s original novel about the world thrown into chaos after a catastrophe involving cell phones.

No director has been attached to the project yet. Cell does have its star in one John Cusack. Who previously appeared in King’s adaptations of Stand By Me and 1408

The novel “Cell” was released in 2006. Here is a quick premise on the book from Amazon.com:

“WHERE WERE YOU ON OCTOBER 1ST AT 3:03 P.M.?

Graphic artist Clay Riddell was in the heart of Boston on that brilliant autumn afternoon when hell was unleashed before his eyes. Without warning, carnage and chaos reigned. Ordinary people fell victim to the basest, most animalistic destruction.

And the apocalypse began with the ring of a cell phone...”

I sort of remember this... I think they put the first chapter or two in some issues of Esquire that year. Can't say that I'll be first in line to see it though.

Not familiar with the novel, but my first thought after reading the brief synopsis was that it sounds kinda like that Indie horror flick The Signal from a couple years back.  Just with cell phones instead of televisions.

I'm a voracious reader, but I've honestly never read a Stephen King novel.  I have the utmost respect for him as an author and I've enjoyed his film adaptations, for the most part.  When it comes to books I've always been more into the political/military/spy novels, hence my love of Tom Clancy books.  I've also recently, in the past two years, really gotten into more nonfiction books of the same ilk.  Currently reading two nonfictions:  "Nuclear Weapons and Foreign Policy" by Henry Kissinger and "Cobra II,"  which is the inside story/report of the invasion and occupation of Iraq.  I highly recommend "How the End Begins:  The Road to a Nuclear World War III" by Ron Rosenbaum.  Very thought-provoking and really ties in with the state of today's world.

Sorry for the tangent!  Lol!

Never read the book.  But, I do see a trend in Cusack's movie selections.  He is a very likable actor, but it seems like he is just about cashing in now.  2012...he is lucky...most actors couldn't recover from such a horrible film.

The book is decent to good. I image the film being something like the movie "Pontypool", which I highly recommend for those that haven't seen it (last I checked it was available streaming from Netflix).
