Since we've received 17 emails on this particular item in the past three hours, we're gonna pass it along even if we are a bit skeptical on it. It seems Gary Oldman is once again letting something slip in terms of a possible third installment in the Batman franchise. While at the 2009 Comic-Con promoting the post-apocalyptic adventure, The Book of Eli, Oldman was quoted that the current plan is to begin shooting Batman 3 sometime next year, with hopes that it will arrive in theaters in two years.

Here's the quote:

"We start filming the next 'Batman' next year, which means it won't come out for another two years," he said, before adding in a sly tone, "but you didn't hear that from me."

Too late, Gary. We all heard it and as with anything relating to a possible sequel to last year's mega blockbuster, The Dark Knight, it's now around the web for everyone to see. But we won't hold you to this if it doesn't come true. After all, Christopher Nolan has yet to confirm whether he'll return and Warner Bros. Pictures executives are being silent on these rumors.

But hey, it gives the fans something to talk about...

Thanks to avidfan for the submission.

UPDATED:

Mania.com talked to DC Comics Film Chief Gregory Noveck at Comic-Con who told us that Oldman's comments were a surprise to everyeone. As mentioned, the production is really waiting for Nolan to finish Inception before any sequel talk will begin in earnest. Noveck speculated that Oldman was, perhaps, speaking from a past assumption and that there are no firm plans to film Batman 3 next year.

All I want to see is Bruce going to deliver two roses on the spot his parents were gunned down, and to find a bouquet of "special blue flowers" left behind on the same spot.

A message from Ra's Al Ghul ? or maybe an opportunity to introduce Talia Al Ghul ?

I think there's truth to this, at least in the studios part for planning ahead. I remember reading that some producers and set workers saying that pre-production had started for the third part. And it seems like they put  tiny hints out there to keep the buzz alive while never confirming.

I also remember someone saying that part of WB's deal financing the costly Inception for Nolan included a Bats 3. I think they're being tight lipped enough to keep the buzz and everyone's  anticipation high, not mine cause I hate Nolan's Batman, but everyone else's

I believe it is coming, as I have said before Nolan and co. will return for the next movie and it it will be great. I don't know if they can top Dark Knight, but I bet it will be still be awesom.e

It all hinges on Nolan and until he says something its just more rumor B.S.

I realize its possible Nolan might have said something to Oldman but he didn't say that so for all we know WB told him they would "like" to start shooting next year or something like that and that's why Gary is thinking that way.  If Nolan doesn't want to shoot until 2011 then they won't shoot until 2011.

they need a 2nd restart on batman with a new director

ponyboy76 7/25/2009 9:50:10 AM

yes, they need a second restart on Batman like I need 2 extra hands so I can give that comment 4 thumbs down and 4 middle fingers.

I agree ponyboy I agree. The Batman franchise is quite awesome now, all we need is Nolan to keep on going. I wish they could find someone who could do Superman as well as Nolan has done Batman. Here's hoping at least the Green Lantern and Flash movies will be good. I have a feeling they will be now that Warners/DC is trying to take some of Marvel's piece of the pie away movie-wise. Plus I mean DC was the WB behind them and Marvel is on there own and doing well. Just think if Warners actually threw their money behind DC what they could produce.
