BATMAN #688 Review

"...these guys bunted instead of swinging away."

BATMAN #688 Review

With all of the natural distraction of there being a new Batman under the cowl, Judd Winick and Mark Bagley remind us of what else is going on in Gotham City. The Penguin and Two-Face are still in the midst of a war with each other and the city is acknowledging that Batman is back. Dick Grayson's methods are different than his mentor's and this issue gives us a look at that as well. From his dealings with the police to the way he's training a new Robin, Gotham's new Bat is getting his balance, figuratively and literally. Two-Face may not give him a grace period though, and begins a balancing act of his own.

The Good

There's still a lot of hype on the new Batman and it's nice that this book has a $2.99 cover price still attached. Since all of the relationships are asserting themselves in new ways, the best scenes are like the one where Damian (the new Robin) is still awake when Batman comes home after patrol, eagerly anticipating a training session. They're at odds with each other to a certain extent, but a relationship is starting and it's fun to read.

The Bad

After the high water marks that Battle For The Cowl and Batman and Robin have set, this one reads and looks very 'meh' by comparison. Judd Winick has never wowed me and he didn't wow me here. It's not that he does a bad job, but he doesn't take any risks either. It all reads very safe, very standard and thereby very blah. Mark Bagley's art is equally un-wowing and these two just seem to have been the wrong choice for their role in Batman: Reborn. To be fair, this is the best showing from Bagley I've seen, it just didn't seem to be up to what this book needed.

The Bottom Line

I've bitched in the past about the forcing of Two-Face being Nightwing's Joker, and this was used heavily at the end of the Nightwing series. Well now that Nightwing is Batman, it looks as if Winick plans on taking it right back to that dry well. If Grant Morrison's series is all about the new, this Judd Winick book comes off as bringing back the old into a new setting. Average writing plus average art leads me to an average grade of C. This is even more disappointing because of the opportunity for doing bold new things in the Bat-Books right now, which neither of these guys are bringing to the page. It seemed like everything was set-up wonderfully; Tony Daniel gave these guys a hell of a pitch with Battle For The Cowl (which Winick was originally supposed to write) but these guys bunted instead of swinging away. Kind of makes me wonder what it would have been like if Tony Daniel had been left on the book.

It was only 20  issues ago that Morrison took a chance and gave us the 666 (what could be) future issue of Batman. With Damian in the lead as Batman. Now Winnick is spinni ng his wheels trying to get into the head space of Dick Grayson, when he clearly is writing for Bruce Wayne.

Not everyone can write for Batman.

If sales are down, it won't be because it's Dick Grayson in the Cowl, I've loved Daniels' Cowl arc. It's because not everyone can write Batman as an identity / personality.

If anything I am now more engaged than ever because it's Dick !

 Hey man!

Gotta agree/disagree.  One question though?  WHAT THE HELL is Tony Daniel doing drawing a cover for a Mark Bagley book!? Tony is a swell artist, but the first page is lightyears ahead of anything Daniel has ever drawn.

I agree that Jud Winick is a lame writer.  NOTHING will ever allow me to forgive his idiotic resurrection of Jason Todd.  Beyond that, he's yet another celebrity that's occupying a dream job spot for someone that would love, and be great at writing comics.

Mark Bagley, however, is one of the strongest action artists in the world.  His drawings have energy, composition, and power.  If you don't dig his work I understand, but it's not because he's not good enough.  HE'S FUCKING AWESOME.  For me, Barry Windsor Smith is a guy that's amazing, but not my taste.

Anyway, my point is that Bags can hang with Frank Quitely and all the others.  He kills Daniel though (no offense Tony.)

I agree. Everyone seems to be on board here, the change has happened, it's established, it's accepted. Everything is up in the air as to where the creative teams take it. This one didn't take it very far.

Zofond, I get that Bagley has his fans inside the industry and out; I'm just not one of them. I've never thought of him as an A list artist. I understand his talent, I understand the man is prolific and timely as hell with his work. He's more than likely a great guy as well, but his style is just very West Coast Avengers. I guess I'll agree to disagree with the Bagley camp of fans.

I guess I am not as critical as you guys. I like Judd Winnick, granted he doesn't have the chops that Morrison, Dini, Loeb, and others might have, but his stuff is good. I really liked his work on Green Arrow, I mean not near as much as Kevin Smith. I do agree with you guys though that he should take a few more chances and try to bring something new to the table like Batman and Robin is doing right now and to a lesser degree even Streets of Gotham. It might be fun to see some villain put two and two together that the orginal Robin became Nightwing and now he is Batman. Dick is having to earn his stripes as the Bat, but wouldn't be more fun if he had a couple of nay-saying villains? I have not read Nightwing much so I can't speak to the whole Two Face is his Joker, but why not craft some more new villians to trouble the new Batman plus Two Face had his start as Bruce's friend who later became an enemy Dick needs enemies that are directly tied to him, not just Bruce because now he is Batman. I know they are doing this in Batman and Robin and its pretty cool because you really don't know what to expect. With Batman's old villains you kind of see their gimmicks coming after almost forty years. I am cool with bringing them back now and again, but I would like to see Winnick do what Morrison is doing and bring in some new bad guys.

The problem with DC is that they can't keep (major) characters dead. Superman, Hal Jordan/Green Lantern and recently Barry Allen/Flash. How long will it be before Bruce Wayne is back?

It would be great if Bruce Wayne stays dead, and with DC losing the rights to Superman in 2012 Superman might be for all intents and purposes dead again as well.

DaForce1 7/14/2009 9:09:23 AM

Actually, Hal Jordan had to be brought back from the dead in order to save the Green Lantern book from cancellation after Winnick destroyed it. Same thing with the Flash. It seems like everytime DC needs a book to head toward cancellation, they put Winnick on as the writer. He needs to go back to doing unfunny comic strips for the newspapers, and leave the writing of comic books to much better people.

That's already been established with Two-Face, as far as Robin becoming Nightwing, and I'm sure he's got the pieces to figure out this puzzle as well.

The Flash was just a mess.

It was doing just fine until they decided to try and off Wally during Infinite Crisis for no reason. Now they messed it up so bad that they had to bring in Barry Allen.

As for Judd Winick, I seriously think he should stick to something like vertigo comics. He's a good writer but not the kind of writer to handle DC continuity.

Also, was there a review for Streets of Gotham on this site?

kwsupes 7/14/2009 7:56:39 PM

thanks for the info Superfist like I said I was not aware of that. Blackest Night tomorrow!

Myrdinn 7/15/2009 6:58:56 AM

Who would you prefer to be the new arch for Batman?

Harley Quinn? Get some twisted tension in there?
