Bale says 'Batman 3' is uncertain (although Depp would do it). Plus: 'Spider-Man 4''s Burglar again? Bay slams 'Transformers' promo. 'Human Target to Australia and more. Where America shops for value, it's your Comics2Film 9.6.23!

Bay Bashes Paramount over TRANSFORMERS Promotion (but then makes up)

Celebrity gossip site has laid hands on some e-mailed correspondence between 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' director Michael Bay and Paramount head Brad Grey, in which Bay complains at the lack of publicity surrounding his movie.

The initial email, dated May 4 was sent to Grey and other suits at the studio about the then-running ad campaign. Here are some excerpts:

"I've been locked away editing for six months, but I have been waiting, and waiting for the anticipation of an 'event movie' to make it into the 'public zeitgeist'. You all talk so glowingly about Transformers being the movie of the summer but unfortunately this has not gotten to the public. I still run into so many people even this weekend with kids that ask 'is that movie coming out this year?'"

He also criticizes Viacom chief Sumner Redstone for going "on air in wall street" and touting 'Star Trek' and 'G.I. Joe' but failing to mention 'Transformers'. He then contrasts his sequel with Sony's  'Spider-Man 2' hype, stating that movie "was everywhere." He then goes on to complain about the lack of impact in magazines like Entertainment Weekly and newspapers.

"So far our print has been in my opinion and [sic] abject failure...The Los Angeles Times Sunday sneaks, we were not on the cover in the form of a name and had a pathetic presence in the newspaper."

And then

"I cannot figure if this is this is a cash issue with your company? Is there some clever idea why are we not spending? I'm not sure. I'm sure though, the movie will do fine, but not to your internal expectations because right now we are fooling ourselves by being cocky."

Bay closes with calling for a meeting to discuss and brainstorm.

And, it looks as if the meeting must have paid off. Bay followed up with a gushing June 6 email in which he praised his peeps at Paramount.

Am I missing something? I wonder why I'm at this studio? I've been working a month and a half seven days a week and wonder why I bust my
ass for Paramount??

Why? Because you have treated me so well. Paramount is like family. Thank you all for busting your butts and bringing your 'A game' for the release of Transformers. I appreciate all the hard, dedicated work everyone did so far to make this a great success. Tracking like this happens once in a while in our careers so we should all enjoy it!

I finished the movie at 12:17pm today and was on a plane to Japan at 1:23pm.

TRANSFORMERS plays Cinexpo

'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' was part of a one-two punch delivered by Paramount at the Cinexpo show in Amsterdam, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Par international exec vp distribution Roger Pollock gave a presentation of the studio's upcoming slate, including clips from 'Shutter Island,' 'The Lovely Bones' and 'The Last Airbender' and capped it with a full screening of the autobot event movie of the summer.

Variety reports that fans in Australia will be able to view the comic-based 'Human Target' on Nine next year. The show is part of a deal between Warner Bros. TV and the Aussie network that provides programming through 2015. The sci-fi rebbot 'V' is alos part of the package.

Bale Unsure If We'll Ever See BATMAN 3

"I truly don’t know that we’re ever going to see another 'Batman' movie."

Those are the words of actor Christian Bale in a video interview posted on MTV Splash Page. MTV was on the set of 'Public Enemies' (the new depression-era gangster movie) talking to the bat-star about the future of the franchise. When asked how he feels about recent reports that Christopher Nolan may not have a third film in him.

Bale said, "It would be purely that he would need to find a story that was good enough," said Bale, "and if he couldn’t find that it wouldn’t happen."

His remarks seem to come more from a place of talking about what he's actually aware of vis-à-vis 'Batman 3' (which is precious little at this point) rather than a prediction of the future. The point of his comments seem to be that he's simply focused on the current movie at hand.

Here are his complete comments:

One person not reluctant to do 'Batman 3' is Bale's 'Public Enemies' co-star Johnny Depp. In speaking with him, MTV raised the old rumors that Depp could appear as the Riddler in the next film. The actor expressed his admiration for Frank Gorshin's Riddler of the 1960s and said, "If the opportunity came, I’d definitely juggle it."

Thanks to Antonello Blueberry for the submission.

SLEEPER Gets a New Screenwriter

Comics great Ed Brubaker told MTV Splash Page that the producers of the film version of his 'Sleeper' graphic novel have hired a new writer to work on the script, although he doesn't name names.

Thanks to Antonello Blueberry for the submission.

ROBOTECH Gets New Writer

Speaking of new screenwriters, check out our exclusive scoop on the latest scribe to attempt to bring 'Robotech' to the big screen, elsewhere on Mania.

TRANSFORMERS: Game with Fame

XBox enabled fans will have a chance to hang out online with Mike Shinoda, frontman of Linkin Park.

Shinoda will play Xbox LIVE Gold members on Friday, June 26th in 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen', the game based on the event movie of the summer. Gamers who want to play with Mike need to send a friend request to the below Gamertag and be online by 3:30PM Eastern Time when the Game with Fame session starts at 4PM.

Linkin Park provides the song "New Divide" for the 'Fallen' soundtrack.

More info about this Game with Fame session can be found at

Kurtzman and Orci on COWBOYS & ALIENS

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writers of the event movie of the summer - 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen', told SCI FI Wire that they're plans for the big-screen adaptation of 'Cowboys & Aliens' will require some distance from the Platinum Studios graphic novel of the same name.

"We always have to remove ourselves a little bit from it ... in the same way that a screenwriter adapts a novel," Kurtzman said in an exclusive interview Friday in Beverly Hills, Calif. "It's very rare that you adapt a novel word for word and structurally as it was written as a novel. You have to find a way to say, 'All right, how am I going to take this blueprint and turn it into a screenplay?' In the case of Cowboys and Aliens, what I think is true to the spirit of the comic book is the idea that it's a genre mash-up—it's a western and a sci-fi movie and everything we love about both genres—and they just kind of collide. But I think there was an enormous amount of invention in Cowboys and Aliens for us."

Kurtzman also said that they were sold on the project based on the title alone, and hadn't read the graphic novel prior to jumping on board.

RED SONJA Next Year?

The announcement of the 'Red Sonja' movie at last year's comic-con made quite a splash. Rose McGowan set to star. Robert Rodriguez set to produce and direct. Everything on the fast track.

And yet, little has been heard since then.

Now, Geek Blog cites and Empire magazine report in which producer Jo Gatta insists that the movie will lens next year.

"Because of certain issues and the economy, we had to change our plan a bit. It's frustrating because we thought we'd make the movie last year, before Conan," Gatta, who is also a producer on the 'Conan' movie, told Empire. "I would say though the emphasis is on Conan [rather than Red Sonja]. It's our crown jewel here at the company and that will be the leader. Red Sonja probably won't happen until next year, as far as making it goes. So we want to launch Conan and reinvent the franchise."

Gatta also said he aims to be true to the character's comic-book roots.

The Burglar to Menace SPIDER-MAN 4?

A fan in attendance at Wizard World Philadelphia reported to Superhero Hype that actor Michael Papajohn says he'll return to 'Spider-Man 4' when cameras roll on it. Papajohn played the Burglar who shot Uncle Ben (but later didn't) in previous Spider-Man movies.

The actor did not get into specifics.

Final Theatrical Trailer for TRANSFORMERS

Michael Bay has posted what is said to be the final theatrical trailer for the event movie of the summer, 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'.

So the same Batman story we read every other day. Eff Nolan and Bale bring back Burton and Keaton :->

Does Michael Papajohn get free pizzas when he flashes his id card? I think he should. His character died, this better be flashbacks or does this indicate that Mysterio will be the big bad here

Bay isn't happy that Paramount probably ponied up over 200mil already and the buzz that Trans.2 had already wasn't enough for him but he wants more. IMO I think he wants to get in the record books, it won't happen, not anything meaningful anyway.

Kurtzman and Orci give a good account on how to fuck up an adaptation, don't read it, go by the title alone and distance yourself from the work. Luckily I haven't read it so the changes won't bother me.

hanso 6/23/2009 9:26:03 AM

What the hell is Bay talking about, they had Megan Fox pimpin Transformers in the cover of last week's Entertainment Weekly.

Christian Bale better hope there is another Batman film directed by Nolan cause Mr. Bale owes the world an apology after subjecting us to his John" I SCREAM REAL LOUD" Connor.

kimbroo 6/23/2009 9:42:13 AM

I'm pretty sure there will be another Batman.  First of all, the studios would be insane not to do another one.  It might end up being some piece of crap outlet for another first-time director or sophomoric action director (can anyone say Mostow doing Terminator 3?) but it'll get done.  I just hope Nolan pulls his act together, gets over Ledger's death, creates a new story, and gets this show on the road.

MrJawbreakingEquilibrium 6/23/2009 10:01:49 AM

They ought to just make a Red Sonja AND Conan movie.  Call it Hyborean Age or someting like that.  That'd be bad ass.  Nuff said.

SgtTechCom 6/23/2009 11:08:50 AM

Bale knows that they wont be able to Top The Dark Knight. All the good villians have been used up everyone left is pretty suck. I don't care if there's another Bats movie either. Bring on some more funtastic Terminator mr Bale =) He's John Connor now.

Johnny Depp rocks he'd be a good Riddler but can't wait to see him as Capt Jack once again =)

SONYMANswallows 6/23/2009 11:22:11 AM

T3 didnt suck until the end battles. The fire engine scene was great.

Of course there will be another Batman film. Wil it be Darknight 2, Batman begins again, Batman continues, Caoed Crusader 1? Wil it be in the next 5-10 years? Could WB WORK WITH fOX AND HIRE THE brohans Strauss to do Batman vs Aliens vs Predator after Scott and Rodriguez run away well I doubt it but I aso thought Indy 4 would be watchable.

WB doesnt even know what they want with any DC characters. I do think Bale needs to actually do some writing and create a story. But first he needs to take a month a bong and a pound of weed and quit being such a psycho.

Equilibrium 2 would be nice

Hobbs 6/23/2009 11:28:13 AM

I agree Hanso, I've been seeing tons of Transformer things out there...what the hell is he talking about.

Man, the Burlar is back in Spiderman 4....can't we just pretend part 3 never happened?

Hobbs 6/23/2009 11:30:03 AM

I love when movie stars say that....I "might" not do another one unless the story is good...aka "only if they give me a boat load of cash then I'll do it."

Obviously with the Nolan brothers doing the script it's going to be good based on the first two. No matter who the villian is outside of Catwoman Nolan has got to offer it to Depp.

SgtTech, you are slowly losing credit on this More Salvation over TDK...I'm telling you man, you have to take the crack out of that shit you are smoking.

jmg134 6/23/2009 11:46:38 AM

If and when they do a Batman 3, they need to do a badass version of Catwoman!  Yeah Halle Berry's version sucked but you guys on here can't tell me you didn't like Michelle Pfieffer's version.  I thought she was amazing and badass.  They should write the version of Catwoman from Frank Miller's Year One comic.  Now that was a cool depiction of Selena Kyle who watched over young runaways.  Have Rosario Dawson play her...that would be hot!

avidfan 6/23/2009 11:49:21 AM

It would have to be the Riddler.  How can you not do it when Depp is offering to play the part sight unseen?  TDK was great, but is not the be all, end all superhero flick.  The show must go on, with or without Nolan.  Hopefully with.

I thought Ironman was better by the way!
