It's beginning to look like Wolfgang Petersen's BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN project might actually get made, and that makes it officially one of the hottest prospects of the next few years, and probably the most anticipated comic book movie... ever?
For the past few years, Petersen (director of AIR FORCE ONE, among others) has been shepherding Andrew Kevin Walker's (SEVEN) script through development at Warner Bros., and for most of that time it seemed like one of the many pipe-dream projects centering on DC characters (i.e. BATMAN BEYOND, SUPERMAN LIVES, etc).
But now Petersen has officially signed on to direct the film, after hinting for awhile he'd merely produce it. What's more, the film has a greenlight, and a 2004 release date. What does that mean?
It's getting made.
"It is a clash of the titans," Petersen told VARIETY. "They play off of each other so perfectly. (Superman) is clear, bright, all that is noble and good, and Batman represents the dark, obsessive and vengeful side. They are two sides of the same coin and that is material for great drama."
Word also has it the McG directed SUPERMAN stand-alone film is also going forward, though in a less concrete format, as well as Darren Aronofsky's BATMAN: YEAR ONE. We'll see.
Said Warners president of worldwide production, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, (the man who pulled the plug on SUPERMAN LIVES in 1998), "We are very pleased that Wolfgang Petersen is bringing his considerable talents to this newest episode of two of our most important franchises. In his hands, BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN will carry forward the Warner Bros. superhero tradition; we look forward to starting this project as soon as possible."
However, despite di Bonaventura's words about carrying on franchises, the film will not be a continuation of the last SUPER film, SUPERMAN 4: THE QUEST FOR PEACE. It is unclear yet how it will relate to McG's SUPERMAN.
