BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (2003): Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part 2

Not that it was unexpected, but the Sci-Fi Channel has sagely renewed Ronald D. Moore's updated BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. So, those still reeling from the shocking final moments of the finale can breathe a sigh of relief. With an elegant first part, "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part 2" managed to outdo its predecessor with just the right cocktail of action, politics, and emotion. While the first part played like a waltz, with each character gracefully falling into the position required of them by the plot, the second installment followed a much more militaristic beat. The characters seemed like cogs in a machine, clicking into place for a final assortment of revelations to be revealed.

With Starbuck, disillusioned by Adama's poor political savvy and fraudulent promises of salvation, on her way to Caprica in a stolen Cylon ship to search of an ancient artifact, the story seems set to divide the cast on either side of a spiritual argument. President Roslin believes herself a prophet and she's managed to sway Starbuck to her side. Meanwhile, Adama and his staff see Roslin's delusions of grandeur as a threat to the safety of their civilization and must determine how best to diffuse her power without overstepping their authority as the military subordinates to a civilian government. This contest of military versus civilian leadership has been a longstanding point of contention in the series and Moore's slow build to the events of this episode reveal a subtle skill at building tension toward an inevitable explosion. The surprise of who takes what side when the conflict breaks out illustrates a similar skill with intricately drawn characterizations.

While a war of philosophy paralyzes the fleet, the survivors of the Kobol expedition fall victim to a rarity in military science fiction. An unsure CO threatens the safety of the team and it falls to his subordinate to suggest a course of action without seeming to defy his superior's authority. Too often, such scenes play without the real world respect to rank and protocol that comes into play here. A lazy writer would have the subordinate relieve his commanding officer, but the consequences of such a scenario are rarely portrayed with any validity. Here, as in all aspects, BATTLESTAR lends real-world politicking to a realistic plight. Though Number Six's intrusions on Dr. Baltar's conscience have lately seemed a little unsubtle, the Cylon's influence takes on a mystical presence as she guides Baltar toward a revelation couched in the visage of his civilization's ancient glory. Another step of the Cylon master plan is being revealed and it will have startling ramifications for the show's characters.

Speaking of Cylons, Starbuck's arrival on Caprica finally ties Helo and Boomer back into the primary action of the story. Whereas Helo spent most of the previous episode coming to terms with his partner's seeming betrayal, his temper has cooled and a philosophical discussion with his Cylon companion fails to register its true meaning with him. The context of the Cylon assault on the colonies is slowly coming into focus alongside revelations of their eventual purpose, and viewers of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE may have an inkling of where the show is headed. Now, if only July would get here a little sooner, we could deal with that final shot...it's a killer.

this season finale was really a stinker. so far in this show this cylons are aready outsmarting the humans , and the humans have no idea about them or how to beat them . the writers rip off a great show from original, and turn it into mush. if they keep writing like this , ill be clapping for the cylons , i bet lorrene greens rolling in his grave at this crap ! i hope this show when comes back in july will have a better direction or this turkey will be in the oven .

I can't wait until July. This is emerging as one of the best shows on television. Great acting combined with amazing character developement. This truly raises the bar for other science fiction series.

This has to be the worst remake and science fiction show ever. I'd be as bold to say it is of Ed Wood quality, complete with shirts & ties in space, soap opera dialogue and situations, etc. What's with turning StarBUCK into a chick? (StarDOE)? The original creator, Glen Larson, fought tooth n' nail to keep Sci Fi Channel and Ronald Moore from molesting his original material. Too bad. This is a stinker that could only survive on a fly-by-night channel, like SFC. It fits right in with all the other garbage on that channel.

I've never seen the original series, like most of those who watch this series, so someone stating that this is a bad remake or not faithful to the original it's just plain useless arguments. Who cares? The rest of us still LOVE this series.
The real stinker it's the fact that arrogant old fans can't accept that there's a new generation of fans for a new generation series.

Ya know... It's posters like you that start flame wars. Word of advice: Keep your comments directed at the tv show and not other posters. Are you mature enough to do that? ...typical nuBSG fanboy rabid bahavior.

I watched the original BSG series on ABC, and even wrote a letter asking for the series to be saved. I still have the postcard response I received. I enjoyed the series for what it was at the time.

It's twenty years later. The new series is different, yes, but it also honors the original concepts of BSG.

I'm enjoying this new series -- the season finale was magnificent, and I'm eagerly waiting for July to see the premiere of SciFi Friday -- Stargate SG-1's season nine, Stargate Atlantis' season two, and Battlestar Galatica's season two.

PS. I think Starbuck rocks. Katee Sackhoff is awesome in her role, and Grace Park is terrific in her role as Boomer.

First off, classic BG was a RIP-OFF of Star Wars when it came out in 1978. There was even a lawsuit by 20th Century Fox that said even the haircuts were copied from SW. So all you classic BG huffers need to chill and realize you're idolizing a show slapped together to cash in on the SW craze of the 70's. And what's great about it? IT'S THE SAME SPECIAL EFFECT SHOT OVER AND OVER AND OVER. It's same cylon ship swooping in shooting, the same laser turret firing, the same Viper blowing up... Should I even mention Galctica 1980? They took Ponch and Jon from CHIPS and placed them on "hoverbikes"...

At least this "revisioning" has the depth and character to make it engaging. Personally all the squabbles internally still don't compare to an all out space battle with the cylons but at least the special effects rock. To compare this with the old BG is like comparing the new Ford Mustang with a Model T. Puh-lease. This one has a lot of promise and it can only get better and better.

Galactica 1980...that's REALLY jumping the shark there.

p.s. Be aware of Universal/Sci Fi Channel stealth marketers, masquerading as nuBSG fans. They have a tactic of creating many clones and posting praise for this crappy show and trashing the very show, that they're rippig off. I have an article by CBS/60 Minutes, as proof, investigating the Sci Fi President, Bonnie Hammer, engaging and being busted for guerilla marketing on her other Sci Fi Channel projects: http://movieweb.com/news/news.php?id=4535

spiderr987--shut the @#$% up! Are you just some lonely middle aged man, sitting in your mom's basement all bitter and hateful you don't have a life outside the ones you create with your "BS"G action figures? Just cause you can't get a girlfriend doesn't mean that people out there who DO have a life can't like quality when they see it.

So shut the @#*! up and just wait in line for Star Wars or something already. Pest.
