BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Back-Story

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Sunday, October 14, 2007

It seems like such a long wait until the premiere of the final season of Battlestar Galactica. The SCIFI Channel is giving us a two hour movie in November called Razor that tells a side story from the second Cylon attack. If you’re like me and you want some BSG now, SCIFI actually has it for you. They have put together a series of two minute shorts similar to last year’s Resistance Webisodes. These new ones are called Razor Flashbacks and they go even further into the past, back to the first Cylon War and tie up a lot of loose ends. The creators of BSG have done a fantastic job of building out the history and mythos of the franchise with these solidly produced shorts. If you haven’t been seeing them during Flash Gordon, then you definitely want to catch them on the web here:

These shorts will run through November 16th.  The first two are online now!

Don’t expect much from FOX this week as they are running baseball or reruns but fortunately the best of the week isn’t on that network anyway. Like a repeat, I’m picking Heroes, Reaper, and Supernatural for my most anticipated shows. No FOX does mean no Prison Break. Again, I’ll be checking out Bionic Woman and Smallville but these two shows are far from my most anticipated. Bionic Woman still has potential and after last week’s horrid episode of Smallville, I’m hoping things can only get better not worse.

Monday

CHUCK (NBC, 8PM EST) Chuck Versus the Wookie

Sarah's fetching CIA colleague arrives, and Chuck joins forces with the two lady spies for a mission involving a million-dollar diamond and a terrorist-funding operation. Meanwhile, Morgan has eyes for Sarah's coworker; and Sarah's double life continues to perplex Chuck.

HEROES (NBC, 9PM EST) The Kindness of Strangers

Matt asks Molly to find the man haunting her dreams, but the outcome is not pleasant; H.R.G. suspects Claire has a new boyfriend; Angela has shocking news; and Micah's cousin Monica (Dana Davis) finds herself with some unanticipated new abilities.

JOURNEYMAN (NBC, 10PM EST) The Year of the Rabbit

Dan finds himself in 1998 following a woman who cofounded a software company, and discovers her fiancé was cooking the books. Meanwhile, Dan's trips disrupt Katie's fund-raiser gala, and the tension only escalates when he admits he sees Livia regularly in the past.

Tuesday

THE UNIT (CBS, 9PM PST) Every Step You Take

The Unit members attempt to rescue American embassy personnel and their families in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, after violence breaks out in the region. Back at home, Jonas' daughter enlists and he tests her conviction.

REAPER (CW, 9PM PST) Magic

Sam must capture an escaped soul who's taken the form of an evil magician. Meanwhile, he desperately tries to get a date with Andi and negotiates with the Devil to peek at his contract so he can see if he gets vacation time.

FLASH GORDON (SCIFI, 9PM PST) Conspiracy Theory

Zarkov is abducted by Rankol's bodyguard, Genessa (Ona Grauer), in a bid to enlist the scientist's help in controlling the rifts. Elsewhere, a rival reporter steals viewers from Dale's station, and a shadowy agent surfaces with questions for Flash and Dale.

OK, here’s another film from the 8 films to die for series of last year. Many of those films were terrible but this one is problem one of the best of the worst. A group of friends get drunk and dance on some graves forcing the spirits to com from beyond to terrorize them. Look for Linc from Prison Break

Flash Gordon is starting to grow on me. Some of the more recent epsiodes have been Mongo based and starting to get better. Dale's boring fiancee has thankfully been written out I hope permanently.

I still like Smallville and will defend it from critics.

Smallville is writen by immature idiots who think all a show needs is sex and women. If I wanted that I'll watch porn.

Reaper is great. Cancel Smallville and give it that timeslot.

Bastards making me put Flash Gordon back on my TiVo. Anyone think it's an accident that they picked Flash to put the BSG bits on. Question is, if thew show needs that kind of life support. Does the network need the show. The last few have been better, and I like the lead actor a little better after the water machine episode.

Sadly this past week is a return to form, if only they could write Dale and Zarkov off the show. They seem to be giving Zarkov a heavier role but I worry whether the actor or the character as written can carry the weight. And seriously, if their gonna try to do humour bring in writers who know how to write humor that's smarter than a fifth grader.

I'm actually pretty impressed with the current season of Atlantis.

The stories have seem more inventive and character driven than previous seasons. Course next to FG it looks like Shakespeare.

Jewel Stait is a welcome addition to the cast and their using her self conscious and responsible character to great effect.

Carter unfortunately is as restricted in her leadership role as Weir was. Basically she gets to rubber stamp Dr. Keller's or one of Shaphard's teams plans and make a few speeches.

I always liked Tapping and the Cater character, but like Jack in Season 8, she's largely wasted in a role that keeps her out of the off world missions. I'm hoping we get more in-city science based crisis so she bring her problem solving chops to the fore.
