BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Producer Talks Final Season

David Weddle, producer of Sci-fi's BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, has talked a little bit about final season of the show to SyFy Portal's Michael Hinman. Part of the topics discussed was the "break" between the first half the season and the last half of the season. The producers don't know whether it will be a short break or a break like the final season of Sopranos(spaced apart many months). The mid-break question comes from a last week quote of actor Jamie Barber leaking out that the Sci-fi Channel could possibly put a year long break between the mid-season finale and the second-half premiere. According to Weddle, they've also started planning out the final episodes of the series so they're prepared when time comes for them to get behind the camera.

From SyFy Portal:

"We were told that SciFi was thinking about splitting the final season, but we do not know how long the gap in that split will be," producer David Weddle told SyFy Portal's Michael Hinman. "As far as I know, SciFi has not decided yet. The SciFi Channel executives are the only ones who will be able to answer that question, once they've arrived at a decision."

"The writing staff just spent three days in a cabin in Lake Tahoe mapping out the final episodes of the show," Weddle said. "We now know how it will end and what each major character's journey will be, though the specifics may go through many changes between now and the conclusion of shooting in March. It was both exhilarating and sad at the end of those three days in Tahoe."

The tv movie, RAZOR, hits the Sci-fi Channel in November and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA returns to the airwaves in early 2008.

Big thanks to Mania Scooper, Mike, for passing this bit along..

Dumb. So the time they've taken so far isn't enough to get it right so they have to delay the final half even further? I love the show (when it's actually on) but just get on with it, already.

The site also says Weddle and Thompson are writing the season premiere and the 2 part mid season cliffhanger and premiere. This upsets me because they're crappy writers who focus on action instead of quality drama and political insight. Ron Moore should be writing those pivotal stories not these yahoos who wrote DS9's worst scripts! I don't mind a delay if it even means a chance execs will reconsider and give the show a few more episodes to round things out and give characters the fullest exploration. This is the most important show in the history of American popular culture, and it deserves the most it can get, including guarantees of several TV movies before the sets are destroyed.

"This is the most important show in the history of American popular culture"...

Isn't that a bit much? I love the show too, but saying things like that without the proof/reasons to back it up just makes you sound like a crazed fan!

I'm glad they're taking their time with the final season, maybe it will actually be satisfying. Not often we get a satisfying end to genre shows...especially when other networks are so quick to cancel them!

I gotta go with Ultrazilla on this one. I love the show too, but if it's so important how come only a million people tune in to see it? It may be important to American pop culture, but it's not important to Americans.

Kudos to Sci-Fi for believing in it.

Awww... for the love of Flying Spaghetti Monster! Don't make us wait too long for the second half of season 4. A couple of months... okay, but 6 or more months? Say it itsn't so!

Never quite was interested enough to watch this show, but what clips I've seen seem decent enough.

But the most important show in American pop culture? That's a whack of hyperbole. American Idol would be far more likely to grab the nod for that one.

They get millions of people watching in several countries every week, plus their final vote tallies are in the several dozen million range.

BSG may be an important GENRE show, but even then it's doubtful it's number one. Stargate SG1 lasted far longer.

I'm sure the break is not the idea of the producers but SciFi channel. Like ABC with Lost they just want to stretch it out as long as possible for profit sake. Let's just hope it's not too long.

If this is the same Glen Morgan who worked on The X-Files - and I imagine it is - I'm not so thrilled about his leaving the show so quickly. Morgan is an excellent writer, especially when he works with his longtime partner James Wong. I'll still give the show a shot, butI am a little concerned.

An Open Letter to SciFi -

Dear Sci Fi -

Please don't take a year off in the "middle" of a season. Most fans don't like it. It's stupid strategy. It would be better to have no break, show the whole thing, and then sit back and rake in the DVD profits while the show is fresh. What is the rationale for putting a "hiatus" in the middle of the season?

I, for one, would be less inclined to watch any new show that you try and premiere with the last half of the last season of BG, if that's the reason for the lag time between the first half and the last half.

Thank you,

Craig
