DC Comics has announced a new comic-book heroine, Batwoman, who will be a "lipstick lesbian" that fights crime in the comic 52.

The new-look Batwoman is one of many new characters which are more ethnically and sexually diverse than their predecessors. The characters are part of a wider effort to broaden the make-up of comic-book characters to make them more in-line with society as a whole.

In 52, Batwoman will be a rich socialite who has a romantic history with another character, ex-police detective Renee Montoya. The series will be set in a world in which established superheroes like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman no longer play a role.

The publication will be year-long and began this month.

Batwoman, who first appeared in July 1956, has not been seen since September 1979 when she was killed by the League of Assassins and the Bronze Tiger.

Thanks to Ron for the heads up.

I personaly have nothing againts any characters being gay or lesbian. But I am sick of everyone making gay and Lesbian characters these days because it is the new "cool" thing to do.

"Batwoman, who first appeared in July 1956, has not been seen since September 1979 when she was killed by the League of Assassins and the Bronze Tiger." Am I missing something? I'm no stranger to comics, but I've never heard of a Batwoman from the 70s. Is she supposed to be BatGIRL, or someone totally different? "The new-look Batwoman is one of many new characters which are more ethnically and sexually diverse than their predecessors." Great - what else are we in for? A gay [enter ethnicity of choice here] Superman? A gay [enter alternate ethnicity of choice here] male Wonder WoMAN?

Batgirl and Batwoman aren't the same characters. The only reason most people haven't heard of Batwoman is because the character hasn't been used since the 70s

They can say it's to show a better demographic or whatever, but I think they're doing this because they thought it would sell comics to perverted adults who want to watch ink get it on. I could be wrong, though.

Jeditemple---- According to the last census approximately 1 out of every 8 people identified as gay or bisexual so that population is considerably larger than 2%. Not to mention the billions in disposable income that the community is waiting to spend. It is a very very smart decision and has potential to be a cash cow.

You're trying to tell me that 12.5% of the population is gay or bisexual. Where was this poll taken, San Francisco? You are out of your friggin mind. No offense.
