Michael Bay is looking to dredge up the long in development I AM LEGEND movie project, with hopes of getting Will Smith to star in it.
While talking to E! Online's Anderson Jones, the helmer, who called the project "a combo of ALIEN and CAST AWAY," revealed that he'd like to resurrect the project, which seems to have fallen into limbo.
I AM LEGEND will be based on the classic book by Richard Matheson which tells the story of a scientist who is the last normal human being on Earth after a virus has wiped out most of mnakind. The rest of surviving humanity has mutated into vampire-like creatures that only come out at night... and who are hellbent to kill the world's last man before he kills them all off during the day.
Warner Bros. currently holds the rights to the book, which was last heard to have Rob Bowman attached to direct. Arnold Schwarzenegger is said to still be up to starring in the project. Previously, Ridley Scott had been attached to it until WB determined it would be too costly.
Matheson's book has been adapted to film twice before. First in 1964's THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, starring Vincent Price, and again as THE OMEGA MAN, with Charlton Heston, in 1971.
