Bayer Leads Vampires in NEAR DARK

It seems that Platinum Dunes has another horror remake ready to begin in the very near future, this one being a revision of the 1987 cult classic vampire tale NEAR DARK. Dunes' Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have chosen director Samuel Bayer to lead the project, says Bloody Disgusting. The original was directed by Kathryn Bigelow, written by Eric Red & starred Adrian Pasdar, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, Jenny Wright & Jenette Goldstein. Filming will begin shortly on the project as it's being fast tracked by Rogue Pictures.

Plot Concept: The story follows Caleb Colton falling for Mae, a vampire drifter, only to find himself turned into a creature of the night. He joins the ragtag of drifters featuring leader Jesse Hooker, fellow members Diamondback & Severen. Chaos ensues when Caleb's family enter the fold..

*sigh* Somewhere in Hollywood there are thousands of brilliant original scripts that will never see the light of day because Hollywood is too busy doing remakes of films that don't need to be remade.

Madness! Near Dark is a great movie and should be kept as it is.

(Though is could be argued the ending is somewhat abrupt.)

I have never heard of this movie, but how many vampire films do we really need? Especially when thy al have very similiar plot elements.

Just watched Near Dark the other night; still holds up pretty well so why remake it? I still like more traditional vampire stories, but I liked that Jesse was from the Civil War days.

Here we go again. Another unnecessary remake of a great movie.
Ponyboy76 and kwsupes, do yourself a favor and rent this one sometime. Three cast members of James Cameron's Aliens are directed by Cameron's then-director wife on a great new take on vampires. In fact, I don't think they even use the name "vampire" in the movie.
I agree with you Brendan. There are so many original ideas about I don't know why producers keep remaking old ones. Well, of course they are feeding off an established name hoping it will mean more money. Why not just be inspired by elements from the original and create your own script?

I have seen alot of Vampire films, but I swear to god, honestly I just saw this one like a week ago. I found it hard to believe they got all these actors to be in the same film. Still, it wasnt all that great. I wouldnt mind a remake.

Most of the actors were frequent James Cameron faves. I believe Bigelow (who may have been married to Cameron at the time, anyone know if that was true?) convinced him to let her borrow some of his actors from Aliens which was filming or recently wrapped. As for the film, I love it for the story and the acting but not necessarily the directing, similar in my feelings for Night Breed. This is a film that, while I love it, could make a kick-ass remake (as could Night Breed).

Original had Nathan from HEROES (Adrian Pasdar), Cameron's "regulars", and a great soundtrack by Tangerine Dream. How/why in the world can a remake be better?
