According to the Times Online, Ben Barnes has signed a three picture deal with Disney to play Prince Caspian for the Narnia franchise.

To take the role the actor had to leave National Theatre's The History Boys hanging, essentially ditching his role while still under contract.

National Theatre has issued the following statement:

Ben Barnes has decided to leave The History Boys early, before his contract is finished. It is something we are taking very seriously. He has accepted an offer to be in a children's Disney film and we have had to fly Jamie King back at extremely short notice this week.

KJ's Take:  Very unprofessional, but at the same time, it's hard to really fault the guy.  Hollywood is a nasty place, and it takes quite a bit to make it in that town.  Asking someone to pass up a title role in one of the biggest blockbuster franchises around right now, just to honor a contract for a small time production, well that's hard to swallow.

They will probably sue, then settle, and in the end it will be a great career move by Barnes.  What it won't be is a great show of character or moral integrity.

Yeah that is true, it is very unprofessional, but this is his career we are referring to. I don't think there is an actor out there that would have passed this opportunity up. Besides it isn't like us movie fans are going to join him for a cup of tea, or a beer. As an audience, all the viewer cares about is the end result.

First of all, when it comes to business, everyone will do what is best for them. He can't be faulted for this, he would be a fool to pass it up. Is this the same guy that is slated to be in the upcoming film Stardust?

If it is the actor slated to be in Stardust, he's older than I thought Caspian was in the second book. Ben's 25 now, and I thought Caspian was younger than Peter. Maybe Ed's age. I can't remember if age is ever specified in the book, though. I think this would be a bit more believable for Dawn Treader, but even that would be a stretch. He doesn't look his age, though, so maybe it will work.

"The History Boys" is hardly what you'd call a "small time production." It's won pretty much every theatrical award you can think of both in London and on Broadway, and is a production of The National Theatre, one of London's most prestigious stage companies. It's one of the major plays one can see in the West End right now. That's far from "small time."

You are of course correct, but relatively speaking, it is small time compared to Narnia.

This movie can't come out soon enough. My kids and I loved the first, they even liked it better than potter.

Hope it is done with the same effort as the first.

If someone asked me to walk away from a job that I loved and respected for a few million dollars.

I'd probably say yes. You can always ask for forgiveness after you're set up for life.
