In a strange twist of fate, the man who once voiced Batman (Batman: Year One) will now play James Gordon. Fox's Batman prequel has found its star in Ben McKenzie (Southland, The O.C.). McKenzie will play the man who will become Commissioner Gordon in Gotham, a series that takes place when Bruce Wayne is still a child.

Gotham is described as an origin tale centering on DC Comics fixture Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham famous”. - The Hollywood Reporter

We also know that at this point, “Gotham's Gordon is a rookie detective for Gotham City Open Police Department's Homicide Squad. A college football star, and a war hero, Gordon was fast-tracked through the GCPD ranks. He's brave, energetic and honest. Driven to live up to the classical virtues of a father he barely knew, he's an idealistic soul, to the point of naiveté. That virtue is tempered by analytical intelligence and an ambitious alpha male ego -- he'll back up his naive ideals with action”.

This is a reuniting of McKenzie and The Mentalist showrunner Bruno Heller who is overseeing Gotham

Cool, I really dug him in Southland. Just glad it isn't Donal Logue in the role

Well, I WILL give this show a shot.  Still can't help but think this whole prequel nonsense is a BAD idea.  The Gotham PD comics (I read a few) were actually pretty good, original, and refreshing, but they still had BATMAN in them!

I think this approach will be a monumental mistake - if FOX was smart they would just leave Bruce Wayne out of this for the first season and don't introduce him as a  child at all, then they can leave room for bringing Batman in when the majority of viewers start getting ticked off that there is no Batman, and yet they are seeing Riddler, Penquin, et al...If they follow the Gotham PD comic book angle, I would be WAY more excited about this project...

I say scrap Affleck as Bats and leave Bats out of MOS2.  Put him back on the small screen for live action TV.  Hire some young, ham'n'egger to play Bruce Wayne / Bats for the TV show, make him a star (which he would inevitably become if this show is written well) then bring this Gotham Batman in a future movie, say 2018, and have your Superman vs. Batman movie, or JL movie, or whatever.  Let Affleck direct, I would be down with that...

Oh well, I'm sure I'll have a few Maniacs whine about my comments.  That's why I'm not in Hollywood, I guess.  We'll see if I'm wrong - I will be watching Gotham to see (and hope) that I am...

Is he gonna rock a stache or is that something Gordon develops later in his career?

Southland is a hugely underrated shoe, IMHO.
