Warner Bros. is keen on making a new film version of the epic Danish folk tale BEOWULF. The project is in development and presently being written by writer Matthew Sand, with Ed McDonnell producing via his Maple Shade Films banner.

BEOWULF was first written in Old English and dates back to at least the 8th century. It tells the story of a hero named Beowulf that has to track down and kill a monster called Grendel that is killing scores of Danish townsfolk. Beowulf and his allies fight Grendel and then goes on to face off against Grendel's mother and then a dragon, earning the poem the distinction of being the first to think up the idea of defeating boss monsters to advance game levels.

Another Beowulf movie is in development (BEOWULF AND GRENDEL is the working title) and stars Gerard Butler (TIMELINE, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA) as the hero.
