BEOWULF Dominates in DVD Races

Paramount Home Entertainment's Beowulf topped both the DVD sales and rental lists in its first week in release ending March 2, says The Hollywood Reporter. The computer-animated fantasy, which grossed $82.2 million in theaters, pushed the previous week's top seller and renter, Universal's American Gangster, to No. 2 on both the Nielsen Videoscan First Alert sales chart and Home Media Magazine's rental chart.

Disney's Ratatouille re-entered the sales chart at No. 3; Paramount/DreamWorks' Transformers and Shrek the Third came in at No. 5 and No. 7, respectively; and Fox's The Simpsons Movie landed at No. 8.

Among new releases, the Sony horror film 30 Days of Night debuted at No. 4, while Barbie Mariposa, the latest direct-to-video release in Universal's Barbie franchise, bowed at No. 6.

In the rental arena, Beowulf earned an estimated $10.9 million, compared with $8.5 million for "Gangster." The rental take for "Gangster," however, represents a decline of just 12% from the previous week, indicating the title may have long rental legs.

30 Days of Night was the top Blu-ray Disc seller for the week.

Now just don't get any ideas of unearthing Christopher Lambert's extremely laughable sci-fi/post-apocolyptic spin version of Beowulf of the mid 90's..which was one the reasons why it was a laughingstock for more than a decade. Seeing him flip around like Luke Skywalker....A LOT AND BADLY I MIGHT ADD, with that silly Jacko hairdo and bad acting/casting from everyone involved. Thank god SCI-FI channel hasn't run this movie very much. And hope Blockbuster has burned all the copies.

I can almost agree with you Raith, it was a cheesey flick. Although i didn't get to see the whole thing. Not that that is a bad thing. I did like the concept they were going for. makes you think how could have turned out if the right people were involved. Anyway, eventually I'll get around to renting the 2008 Beowulf.

They'd be selling double that amount if they'd have had the foresight to include an optional anaglyphic 3D version with pack-in glasses.

Beowulf was great, but Beowulf and Grendel with Gerard Butler and Stellan Skaarsgard was even better. Live action with beautiful landscapes and great performances.
