Futuristic Zorro? Give me a break, stop with the nonsense.

20th Century Fox wants to take a certain iconic masked hero out of his western environment and turn him into a futuristic vigilante. And it seems they have found the man they want to don the outfit, with Variety reporting that Gael Garcia Bernal signing on the dotted line to become Zorro Reborn. Check out the logline down below to see how this version will differ from Zorro adventures from the past and Sony's recent push to reboot the character as well. The search is on for a director to tackle the script turned in by writers Glenn Gers, Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy. Mark Amin, Cami Winikoff and David Higgins will produce for Sobini Films; 20th Century Fox exec Steve Asbell will oversee the project for the studio.
Plot Concept: The story is a futuristic reboot of the Zorro mythology that will not be set in California or Mexico, despite the story's Western themes. Garcia Bernal would play the Spanish swordsman as a masked vigilante bent on revenge.
If there is one thing that is consistent on this boad, it's always people that trash stuff before they see a single piece of footage. I don't think the idea sounds bad, and I'm actually intrigued.
This concept does sound bad, but I remember Mania telling us about this about a year ago. While this concept does make you want to roll your eyes, I'll at least wait until I see a trailer before I totally dismiss it.
I mentioned this before, so I'll do so again. It would be kind of a cool reverse tip-of-the-hat if the guy gets the idea to become Zorro after going to see a Batman movie at the theatres... :)
I'm with you ,millean. At first this makes you go OMG & WTF, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt until I hear more of the plot, director and trailer.
A Batman nod would be fun, but there are probably copyright issues since this is a Fox movie and Bats is Warners. I'm not sure if Zorro is owned or in public domain.
Zorro in the future....with swords? Can you say oxymoron. Gee, maybe they'll give him a lightsaber. Sorry!!! If the studios are truly interested in rebooting the franchise, they only have to look at the 2005 mock biography and the first origin story of the pulp hero Zorro, written by Chilean author Isabel Allende. It's well written and fills in many of the gaps in Zorro's background.
On another tangent, Banderas still looks pretty good for his age...if they were to update the timeframe, he could be the elder Zorro passing on the tradition to a new generation...steampunk Zorro, anyone?
