Comicscape: Ben Johnson Counts Out Countdown - Apr 30, 2008 - 06:32pm
I'm sure this was a good column this week. I'd know if I could read it. But because the formatting of this whole site redesign is so unbelievably BAD, I'm having a hard time reading a entire column of narrow text that has no line break between paragraphs. Not to be melodramatic, but there is literally NOTHING that I like about this new look. It hinders functionality and ease of access to information in every way possible. I have to hunt for what I want to find. Even the rotating lead stories feature on the home page is mind-boggling in the weakness of its execution. I've given up, removed Mania from my favorites, and will check back in after a couple of months to see if you guys at Mania have come to your senses. I'm not holding my breath.

Gordon Lee and the CBLDF Win - Apr 24, 2008 - 10:15am
Kurt, thanks for the update on the case. Good news, and good job. I concur; this site redesign is ABSOFRIKKINLUTELY AWFUL. Make it stop. Please.

Mania Exclusive Interview: Simon Pegg - Mar 31, 2008 - 10:32pm
Is it just me, or is Simon Pegg just about the coolest dude in Hollywood these days? I genuinely look forward to his work. Cheers, mate.

WOLVERINE: FIRST CLASS #1 - Mar 31, 2008 - 10:28pm
yeah, nothing says "softer" and "gentler" than a homicidal maniac with 12-inch razors poppin' outta the back of his hands for the sole purpose of engaging in a dialogue with his opponents that usually ends in their disembowelment. Gee, Marvel, I feel soft and cuddly *all over!*

Show Your Expertise in Mania Properties! - Mar 24, 2008 - 02:30pm
chip, thanks for clearing the code and turning the pop-ups off. So long as "for now" becomes "forever," I'll be happy. I understand the need for advertising revenue, and I understand the attraction of the pop up in the online interactive space. But pop-ups are so insidious, so debilitating to the user experience, they are reason for me to not visit a site if I know I'm going to get them. Multiples or no, they are a pox upon all sites. As for spyware, I'm on a Mac. I may be uninformed about this, but to my knowledge I've never had a problem with spyware. Mania is the only site that hammered me with repeated identical pop-ups every time I clicked on a link or clicked on an info field. My frustration level was nearing atomic.

Show Your Expertise in Mania Properties! - Mar 24, 2008 - 10:51am
Preach it, galaga. In the few clicks that it has taken me to log in and start typing this message, Mania saw fit to launch THREE of those *&^%$ing pop ups. Why on earth would I continue to come to this site and participate if I know Mania is deliberately trying to make my experience as unpleasant as possible?

First Look at G.I Joe's SNAKE EYES - Mar 21, 2008 - 05:11am
stupid stupid stupid. I thought Hollywood had officially run out of ideas with Dukes of Hazzard. GI Joe and Speed Racer signal that no, the end is nowhere in sight...

Watching the Watchmen - Mar 12, 2008 - 05:39am
Kurt, an excellent column. I think you're spot on with your insight concerning the importance of Watchmen to comic book movies. It's an angle I hadn't thought of. Well done.

Black Freighter Confirmed for WATCHMEN DVD - Feb 28, 2008 - 01:48pm
"They're going to do it in the style of a Japanese anime..." What? It was in the style of an old EC comic in the book. What the hell is up with Japanese anime? Good grief.

FANTASTIC FOUR #554 - Feb 19, 2008 - 08:36am
I'm with Kurt on this. I really enjoyed it. I left the mainstream Marvel U years ago, and I haven't picked up an issue of the FF since Byrne's run. I'll admit that my primary draw was curiosity regarding what kind of feel Millar and Hitch would bring to the book. I'll admit to being very pleasantly surprised. I read somewhere that before Millar started his run on UFF, he got the best advice on how to write the FF from Stan Lee himself: essentially, there's nothing too big or too out there for the FF. And bammo, if Millar doesn't take that to heart here in the mainstream Marvel U. I was curious to see how Hitch's exacting naturalistic style would play here. It's a nice look. While I think the Hitch uniforms are a bit too "Ultimates," (that's an editorial observation - blurs the line too much between the two properties), I very much enjoy the full range of expression with which he renders his characters. And I agree with Millar, the Baxter Building just looks cool. I appreciate the set pieces that Hitch labors to communicate, giving us a sense of place and comfort. For a book about a family, it's nice to feel like there's a "living room" in which these people relax and live. Well done all the way around. I look forward to what's next.

SUPERHERO Spoof Trailer Online - Jan 31, 2008 - 02:09pm
I don't know if I'll see this or not, but that trailer had some genuinely funny bits. As opposed to any of the non-Zucker spoof movies, whose trailers only made my eyes bleed.

Destro Has been Cast?? - Jan 31, 2008 - 11:07am
this project doesn't just sound cheesy, it sounds Velveeta cheesy. As in, totally artificial cheese-like product. It's so bad, it doesn't even qualify as the real thing. Stupid stupid stupid.

Running up the Hill with Brandon Thomas - Jan 23, 2008 - 07:38am
Ultimates 3 #1 was such a horrifying disappointment. I wouldn't buy #2 if a gun were put to my head. Just thinking about the train wreck that was the first issue makes my blood boil. Bad bad bad bad BAD.

SPOILER X-FILES 2 Pics Online - Jan 23, 2008 - 07:14am
Maybe I'm being dense, but I don't know what exactly is being spoiled with those pics. Is it a reference to some past episode? There's nothing to get excited or not excited about.

First Set Photo for WOLVERINE Online - Jan 22, 2008 - 08:06am
wow. Those are some exciting pics. "Look, mate! I's a bloody house made 'a too-bah-foors!" "Good on ya, mate! Eef it's fer that Wolverine blokes movie, I'll drink ta that!" "Screw that, mate! I'll drink ta that curvy Sheila next ta tha lumbah! Now that's what ah'm talkin' about!" I'm thrilled.

HD STAR TREK Teaser Online - Jan 21, 2008 - 06:24pm
I thought it was nifty. I'm holding off on getting excited until I see more substance, but I'll admit to being intrigued. Two (or three) cents concerning casting: Wow, do they have a lot of people in this flick. I can't imagine some of these guys (Kirk and Spock's parents in particular) are going to get more than a couple of minutes on screen. I like the idea of casting the relative unknowns, and I like the idea of Eric Bana as the heavy, but I hope the Pegg and Urban castings don't make me think of the actors as opposed to the characters on screen. "Look, it's the dude from Rohan!" as opposed to "Look, it's Bones!" I don't know the Young Kirk actor from a hole in the wall, but holy smokes, I hope he doesn't annoy the crap out of me.

Official STAR TREK Site Online - Jan 17, 2008 - 07:21am
I hate to be a such a colossal dork, but, First Contact was FAR from the "last great Trek film." It was garbage. The last GREAT Trek film was Wrath of Khan. ST IV was good. VI had great intentions and was better than most. All of the TNG movies MUST be ranked behind VI. For all it's flaws, I contend Generations is still the best TNG flick. All the others play like made-for-TV-movies. Ugh, ugh, double-ugh.

One Comicscape, Many Subjects - Jan 16, 2008 - 11:48am
Plastic boobies aside, Tiffany Fallon is a stunning woman. I have no idea if she has acting chops or not (does it *really* matter?), but dadgum, she certainly looks the part. Yowza. ...and it seems to me that the upcoming Skrull invasion could save Marvel the headache of all this retconning, ie, "Mary Jane has been married to a Skrull!" Pretty lame lame LAME that they did away with the public knowledge of Peter's identity. Just kicked the legs out of Civil War. Waitaminnit! That wasn't Steve Rogers who died! It was a Skrull! Yeah, that's the ticket! (Which means there's now a popsicle Skrull at the bottom of the ocean with Cap's shield...)

Director Singleton Talks About A-TEAM - Jan 14, 2008 - 12:44pm
wow. just when I thought we had hit the bottom of the barrel with these '80s TV movies. Has Singleton made *anything* worthwhile since Boyz? So sad to see such promising talent turn into a Hack-meister.

Weta Workshop Handling JLA Costumes - Jan 07, 2008 - 05:16am
I can't help but think of the last WETA superhero movie I can recall...the Silver Surfer and related effects were the absolute bomb in FF2. Unfortunately, so was the movie in which those effects were wasted. I certainly hope the JLA powers-that-be took note of that cosmic fiasco. Costumes and effects do not a movie make.

Favreau Expresses Interest in AVENGERS - Jan 03, 2008 - 07:21pm
Kudos to Marvel for having the right idea. My only thought is the age of the actors by the time a big team movie could be made. Let's say they get a Thor, Cap and Ant-Man done in the next three years, followed by an Avengers movie in, say, five. Robert Downey as Tony Stark would be 48. Would we buy a middle aged Tony Stark? The answer is probably yes, but they might be pushing it. But, given that they're re-booting Hulk after one movie with an entirely new cast, it's not like there wouldn't be precedent. (Let the arguments begin! Would Hulk be the Eric Bana Hulk or the Edward Norton Hulk? The mind boggles!) Nit-picky, I know. Just thinkin'.

Storm Shadow & Scarlett Cast for G.I JOE - Dec 19, 2007 - 03:07pm
That chick has a nice rack. ...what, you mean there are supposed to be other requirements for this role?

HELLBOY 2 Trailer Hits Online Thursday - Dec 19, 2007 - 03:00pm
Would that all geek movies were so lucky to have a del Toro at the helm (Tim Story, I'm lookin' at you, pal.). I was skeptical about the first Hellboy, but the sense of a unified world that del Toro created gave it such a nice feeling and sensibility. Pan's Labyrinth was phenomenal. His storytelling demonstrated a smooth facility in moving between the real and the fantastic, which was a hallmark of Hellboy as well. Lookin' forward to this sequel in a big way.

Chow the 'Master' in DRAGONBALL - Dec 19, 2007 - 02:35pm
Chow's gotta be slummin' pretty hard if he's agreed to be in such dorky dumbass movie as this one. Maybe his wife wants a new car or somethin'. Sheesh.

New Trailer for Pixar's WALL-E - Dec 18, 2007 - 08:43am
This looks terrific. I'll be the first to suggest that amongst all the geek-o-licious fun '08 will bring, WALL-E may very well steal the show from all of them. VERY much looking forward to seeing this in the theatres.

DARK KNIGHT Trailer Officially Hits the Web - Dec 16, 2007 - 08:39pm
Oh my. I think my geekometer just hit 11.

ULTIMATES 3 - Dec 11, 2007 - 09:22am
"D+"? Kurt, you're being far, far too generous. This book was pure unadulterated crap from front to back. I seriously have to wonder who the editorial genius was who thought it a good idea to replace Millar/Hitch with any combination including Joe Mad. The tone and voice of U1 & 2 has been completely tossed out the window for this over-the-top cliche in every way approach. It's awful from every perspective; I didn't know Loeb could write that badly, Joe Mad is COMPLETELY the wrong choice to follow Hitch, and the colors are an exercise in excess. I didn't expect someone to fill every inch of the shoes left by Millar and Hitch. But I did expect some kind of continuity in tone and voice. Best example of a smooth handoff that maintains tone and voice in my mind would be Daredevil: Bendis/Maleev to Brubaker/Lark was as smooth and effortless a transition that kept me "in the zone" as one could pull off. This Ultimates 3 is garbage. Pure garbage. And that's just a dadgum shame.

Wayans Bros. Plan Cop Action Spoof - Dec 10, 2007 - 10:52am
The only Wayans brothers movie worth a damn is "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka." Everything else they've done makes me shake my head and wonder when they're gonna put the crack pipe down.

First SPEED RACER Trailer - Dec 07, 2007 - 01:58pm
dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb DUMB! The original cartoon was stupid. As a kid growing up in the '70's, I couldn't stand Speed Racer. How many "adventures" do you have to go on before you check your *&^#@@@!!! trunk, Speed? What the hell is up with that monkey? It was all so patently ridiculous, even to a 10-year old at the time. John Goodman is slummin' with this one. Ugh.

Horror Scripters Exorcise Their Rites at Warner Bros. Rally - Nov 29, 2007 - 03:10pm
I'm not entirely up on the details of the strike, nor am I big on unions, but my understanding is that this has some pretty profound implications for all creative professionals across all industries. Working out compensation issues for usage in new and emerging technology mediums is more important than most people realize. This isn't about "those writers are easily replaced," (as some commenters have asserted in other posts) it's about those writers (perceived competence aside) having access to all revenue streams in which their work is used. I wish them luck for a favorable resolution. That said, I'm sure some of those horror writers are responsible for the torture porn garbage on the market these days. Perhaps they should turn their instruments of exorcism around on themselves.

SAW IV Hits DVD January 22 - Nov 26, 2007 - 01:48pm
Yes! All four Saw movies + Capitivity + Hostel all on DVD means a good solid 10+ hours of jerk-o-matic fun for torture porn deviants everywhere!

Jack Black Talks GREEN LANTERN - Nov 21, 2007 - 03:49pm
This absurd idea of a movie aside, I have to admit that if I met Jack Black in an alley, I'd beat the crap out of him with a 2x4. What an annoying yutz.

CAPTIVITY: Unrated Edition - Nov 18, 2007 - 08:36pm
Torture porn garbage. The addition of Cuthbert only gives the deviants something upon which to deflect their excuse for jerking off to this crap.

International IRON MAN Trailer - Nov 05, 2007 - 08:33pm
I have to admit...I was skeptical at first, but now I think I'm looking forward to this.

X-FILES 2 Begins Production Dec 10. - Oct 29, 2007 - 05:07pm
Random comment, in reference to nothing in particular...I enjoyed the first movie (despite its glaring and ginormous plot holes), but found the TV show difficult to watch afterwards. It was fun to see the X-Files universe suddenly become as large as one might have hoped on the silver screen, but it got small and utterly implausible in transitioning back to the small screen. If I recall correctly, Scully was still in denial mode on the TV show, *despite* having been kidnapped and stuck in alien goo and watching a spacecraft launch out of the Antarctic in the movie. Just didn't make a damn lick o' sense, and I stopped watching shortly thereafter. But, I'll enjoy seeing these characters again. Sounds like fun.

SAW IV Cuts Out the Competition - Oct 29, 2007 - 05:01pm
Methinks thou dost protest too much.

SAW IV Cuts Out the Competition - Oct 29, 2007 - 12:38pm
Touch a nerve, did I? You can get help, p-boy. Admitting you have a problem is half the solution. Not watching torture porn is the other half.

SAW IV Cuts Out the Competition - Oct 29, 2007 - 12:07pm
Deviant is as deviant does, ponyboy.

SAW IV Cuts Out the Competition - Oct 29, 2007 - 11:31am
I wonder how many people who read sonymanswallows posts think he has two functioning synapses to rub together.

SAW IV Cuts Out the Competition - Oct 29, 2007 - 09:40am
Apparently, good old fashioned shame has no effect on torture porn deviants who keep the market alive for sludge like "Saw" and "Hostel." Pathetic, disgusting and disturbing.

DARK KNIGHT Teaser on Halloween? - Oct 18, 2007 - 10:38am
anybody else notice that the pumpkin's mouth is in the shape of the bat symbol? Fun fun indeed!

Possible Cast Choices For JUSTICE LEAGUE - Oct 15, 2007 - 02:41pm
Like, ohmyGAWD, this movie will be TOTALLY rad! We'll have, like, superheroes and superhotties, like, TOTALLY doin' it to each other! Like, I canNOT wait to see how Flash deals with what a BITCH Wonder Woman is when she like, TOTALLY dumps him for the HOT black man with the green ringie thingie. Oh. My. Gawd. This is SO going to be the MOST AWESOMEST MOVIE in the WORLD! (dear god, wake me when it's over!)

Cho as Sulu, Pegg as Scotty in STAR TREK - Oct 12, 2007 - 03:54pm
I'd just like to express my pleasure in noting that *I* was not the first one to say something about a Korean actor portraying a Japenese character. Simon Pegg is an absolutely wonderful actor and I love his work, but his casting breaks the pattern of casting newbies. Maybe it's just me, but it seems that Pegg will stand out as an immediately recognizable face amongst unknowns. I have no reason to think that his performance won't be great, but his presence could be a bit distracting. (Dare I say it? He might stand out like a...like a...round peg in a square hole.)

Update: Jessica Biel Out of WONDER WOMAN - Sep 28, 2007 - 05:51pm

TERMINATOR 4 Arrives in 2009 - Sep 26, 2007 - 07:56am
I hate to raise a dissenting voice, but: please please please...make it stop. Terminator was a classic for the ages. T2 was indulgent and lacked the emotional punch of T1. T3 jumped the tracks completely in asking us to accept ONCE AGAIN some kind of stupid convoluted logic (or lack thereof) regarding time travel. It don't make no damn sense anymore...please, make it stop!

Update: Jessica Biel Out of WONDER WOMAN - Sep 25, 2007 - 10:32am
I agree with Myrddin. An actress cast from the Monica Bellucci mold is the route to take with WW. The idea of Biel strikes me as pandering to "who's hot now" type of thinking. And for the life of me, I don't understand the hard on some people have for Ryan Reynolds. The guy is a boob. If his only job is to stand around, flex his six pack and spout snarky sarcasms, then sure, he's gold. But if the idea is to create a character out of more than cardboard, please, please, please cast someone else. Blade 3 made me want to gouge my eyeballs out. His "performance" didn't make it any better.

Aussie Victoria Hill Tries For JLA's WONDER WOMAN - Sep 24, 2007 - 12:58pm
Tommy, you always add a little more class to every conversation in which you engage. Thanks for those "mosquito bite"-sized pearls of wisdom.

New BEOWULF Trailer Online - Sep 20, 2007 - 09:17am
I dunno...I can't get a bead on this film. On the one hand, it's Beowulf, which gets a big thumbs up. On the other hand, I'm really having a hard time grasping why this whole thing is CGI. There are moments in these trailers that look great, and others look like a video game. "I will kill your mon-stah"...he looks plastic and lifeless, like that creepy Polar Express. I don't understand the aesthetic Zemekis is going for. The smart ass in me thinks he's trying to beat George Lucas to the punch in creating an entire movie without real life flesh and blood actors...

Oliver Stone Sees Willis in PINKVILLE - Sep 06, 2007 - 05:22pm
Tommy, for somebody who states his age as being 30, you sure do sound like you're 12 years old. Your inability to string together a coherent statement, much less without embarrassing spelling mistakes, does nothing to instill confidence in your intellectual capabilities. But, since you've asked, let me explain myself. I never said Stone has blamed Bush for anything in the past. Here's how the joke works: Oliver Stone is an Unhinged Deranged Leftist (UDL). Other UDL's include Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer, Louis Farrakhan, Markos Moulitsas, Michael Moore, Harry Belafonte, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Jim Lehrer and Dan Rather. (This is FAR from a complete list. Just a representative sampling.) UDL's uniformly and without hesitation blame everything and anything that is bad or has gone wrong in this country on the President. 9/11 was Bush's fault. The economy is Bush's fault. Gas prices are Bush's fault. The cost of health care is Bush's fault. Global Warming is Bush's fault. Hurricane Katrina is Bush's fault (my personal favorite). And on and on and on. Oliver Stone, besides being a UDL, is also a UDL Conspiracy Theorist. (see: JFK) So, one puts these two tendencies together (Blame Bush First + Conspiracy Theory) and you develop a one-liner that creates a contrast in absurdity. That's all the joke is, Tommy. Nothing more complicated than that. If you're a bit confused, read this paragraph again. Read it one more time after that, if need be. You'll eventually start to understand. "Ass Hat," by the way, is quite inventive. See, you can do contrasts in absurdity too! "This is my ass, this is a hat! Put the two together, you get an Ass Hat!" Of course, I don't think it has quite the withering insultative power you think it has. One more thing: your MySpace page sucks. You're quite the "graphic designer" if you can't even put a background on your page doesn't completely obliterate the legibility of the information presented. "Ass Hat" indeed.

Wersching Has a Badge in Fox's 24 - Sep 05, 2007 - 12:08am
hmmm...Annie Wersching, Jennifer Garner, Gillian Anderson...according to Hollywood, the FBI is full of nothing but HOT CHICK AGENTS! Booyah! I'm definitely in the wrong line of work! I'm signin' me up for some federal law enforcement!

Oliver Stone Sees Willis in PINKVILLE - Sep 02, 2007 - 04:38pm
one more thing, gauleyboy...as to your being censored: last time I checked, Mania was a privately held company with a clearly defined terms of service agreement. If you are found be non-compliant with the terms of service of a privately held company, then seems to me they can indeed tell you what penalties await your non-compliance. The "government" didn't censor you. Bu$hCo didn't censor you. The owners of this privately held propery told you that you were not in compliance with how they run their private enterprise. Now please, get back in your place.

Oliver Stone Sees Willis in PINKVILLE - Aug 31, 2007 - 05:58pm
so let me get this straight...for all the pontificating and bloviating you do, gauleyboy, telling people to shut up and not talk about this or not talk about that, you actually got your wrist smacked from on high and were told YOURSELF what to say and not to say? Oh, that is rich. I love it.

Oliver Stone Sees Willis in PINKVILLE - Aug 28, 2007 - 11:05pm
Wow...I just noticed what a colossal spaz you are, gauleyboy. You *actually* went in and completely edited all of your overly long ranting comments to short, pointless gibberish. (I know, I know, as though the long version was any less pointless gibberish.) You've got some cajones to actually claim you are "not allowed to speak (your) mind." Please. Grow up.

***warning: soapbox alert*** Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain jokes aside, is an excellent choice to play the Joker. I'm stoked that his white face is just stage paint and could easily wash off. It fits with the overall dictum for this franchise that everything "make sense." The thought of someone nuts enough to put on make up and go kill people makes the character a great deal more terrifying...MUCH more disturbing. And disturbed. My guess is that the Joker is being played as an *actual* psychotic, not just a cartoon version of a psychotic (*coughNicholsoncough*). And that gets a big thumbs up from me. I concur with an earlier comment: I don't want to see any more pictures. I don't want to get any more news. I want to walk into the theater and enjoy it for what it is, free of preconceived notions and spoilers. Don't wanna know. Nossir. Don't wanna. And if I may tangent, the "everything must work in the real world" rule is exactly why a JLA movie will fall flat on it's face. You can't put the Nolan/Bale Batman in a movie with a dude from outer space, who dresses in oversized underoos and flies around shooting "heat vision" from his eyes. Everything about the JLA is anti-Nolan/Bale Batman. It Will. Not. Work. That's not to say that a JLA movie wouldn't be fun. Just not with this current Batman. No way. Fuhgeddaboudit.

Kevin McKidd As The New THOR? - Aug 15, 2007 - 08:38am
Am I the only one who's noticed all that's missing in that picture of Mr. McKidd is a little metal helmet with wings on the sides? Chain mail, check. Leather, check. Red cape, check...

Karen Allen looks like she hasn't aged a day. This should be a ton o' fun.

B.P.R.D.: KILLING GROUND #1 - Aug 13, 2007 - 12:40am
I've not yet picked this issue up, but I'm very much looking forward to it. I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment, Kurt, of the BPRD series. The last two arcs were superb, very much setting the example for, as you put it, literate genre fiction. Guy Davis' illustration is a very rare treat on this book. I identify these characters so much with Davis, I almost don't want to see Mignola draw them. I'll also give kudos to the Dark Horse editors, in collaboration with Mignola, for making BPRD a vehicle for the franchise, giving the Hellboy universe an expanded and much more clearly defined world in which to live. One of my biggest complaints with Mignola's books was the cardboard cutout nature of the supporting cast. Not any longer. Liz feels like a real person, Dr. Corrigan is a real woman and Abe is no simple "fish man." Kudos all the way around on these efforts. Well done.

First Look at Burton's SWEENEY TODD - Aug 12, 2007 - 06:53pm
I used to be in the hit or miss camp until his "Planet of the Apes" remake. Then I became violently opposed to anything Burton puts on screen. "Apes" freakin' scarred me for life. I couldn't believe that the same guy who did Edward Scissorhands crafted and produced such a C-grade pile of hack doo-doo. I can't imagine ever paying to see his work in the theater again.

DOCTOR STRANGE - Aug 12, 2007 - 06:43pm
*sigh* I didn't write anything about the review or the DVD because I am unmoved to do so. I am moved to comment on your comment because, unlike the review or the DVD, it annoyed the living crap out of me. If you feel compelled to "name first," then might I make the following suggestion: the next time the urge to display your manhood in such a fashion takes hold of you, push away from your computer, pick up the phone and call a girl. Ask her on a date. If you do this with enough frequency, some lucky girl will take you up on your proposition. And if enough of them take you up on your proposition, you might (and I underline MIGHT) find a use for that thing in your hand besides stroking it furiously as you type "first!" on a comment board.

DOCTOR STRANGE - Aug 12, 2007 - 04:46pm
hey metalwater, in case you weren't paying attention: dolts, losers and morons from Ain't He Huge News are the only ones who whip it out and proclaim themselves first on a comment board. Get a freakin' life, dude.

maf54, as previously pointed out, Jerrad is not perfect, and he makes mistakes. Asking him to pay attention to the proper spelling of small things like, oh, I don't know, the names of characters of the properties he writes about is asking just too, too much of him. Trust me, you're better off not expecting that much by way of editorial standards.

Two thumbs on each hand? That would be, what, opposably opposable thumbs? Opposite opposable thumbs? Opposable opposability? The mind boggles.

almostunbiased, it ain't nothin' but a thang, dude. My use of "roundeye" was meant to be self-deprecating. In keeping with further racial self-deprecation, I have been known to refer to myself as "honky" and "paleface," too. Wasn't sure why you reacted so harshly, but hey, no big deal. C'mere and gimme a big man-hug, ya big lug.

gregcox, please understand. Jerred isn't perfect, and he makes mistakes. You must not expect so much from him.

Despite my previous anal retentiveness regarding accuracy in racial casting, I think it important to remember that TOS was about the Big Three: Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Everyone else, frankly, was window dressing. They filled a need for Roddenberry's multi-cultural can't-we-all-just-get-along vision of the future. Black woman? Check. Asian man? Check. Mop-headed Russian? Check. ("isn't he cute? Just like those Monkee boys on TV!") Was Sulu really a "wildcatter?" Was Uhuru a "tomboy?" Maybe, maybe not. But really, these second-tier characters didn't get a chance to shine on their own until the movies. Should Abrams be cut some slack for imagining personalities on characters who were essentially cardboard props? I'm willing to do so.

More TOS Characters in STAR TREK XI? - Aug 07, 2007 - 09:33am
almostunbiased, you're making my point. Us stupid roundeyes don't know, and more importantly, don't care about the differences between asian racial standards. Not to beat this dead horse, but the example of Yanks and Scots and Iowans goes directly to what I'm talking about. In the context of this discussion, all three are basically Western European Caucasian standards. Clive Owen is Christian Bale is Matt Damon, etc. But, you throw in ethnically Greek Telly Savalas, and now he's a bit "off." Just like half-Hispanic Jessica Alba (hot as she is) is a bit "off" for Sue Storm. So, just as you can identify differences between caucasian europeans, central american hispanics and black Africans, so to can you identify differences between Asians. Roundeyes generally don't care. Asians do.
