Birds Producer Responds to Criticism from The WB

    November 28, 2002

Mediaweektalked to Birds of Prey producer Brian Robbins, giving him achance to respond to critical comments made by WB Entertainment president JordanLevin. Earlier this week Comics2Filmreported Levin's remarks to Variety concerning the show's failure; Levin saidBirds of Prey was "not moving in the right way creatively" and calledit a "failure of execution."

Robbins, who isalso a producer on Smallville, fired off his own thoughts on thematter and not surprisingly, he blamed Levin. Robbins claimed Levin "didn'thave faith in the show" and had "buyers' remorse" from the start.

"I think[Levin] was afraid of the 'Batman' world being too dark for his air,"Robbins said. "He was never a huge fan of the show."

Robbins hadseveral ideas on why the show didn't make it, including stiff competition likeABC's The Bachelor. But he added, "if I was running the network, Iwould have tried to figure out a way to survive until after The Bachelor, and then give it a chance."

On the otherhand, Robbins agrees with Levin that first-time series writer Laeta Kalogridiswould have benefited from an experienced writing partner, and said she"might have been in over her head."

Despite these disagreements,Tollin/Robbins Prods, run by Robbins and Mike Tollin, is still right at theheart of The WB. Besides being the force behind the hit show Smallville, theyare producing a midseason martial-arts drama called The Black Sash, as well asworking on three other shows for The WB's 2003 Fall lineup.

Thanks to Birdsof Prey Online for pointing the way.
