Welcome back, Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons). You had been replaced these past few weeks by an evil replicant who transformed your well-meaning insensitivity into cruelty and hate. The writers don’t always walk that line the way they should and when they slip, the show becomes insufferably mean-spirited. Thanks to your marvelous return to form, The Big Bang Theory recovers from its recent swoon.
A pair of romantic entanglements take center stage: Leonard (Johnn Galecki) hooks back up with Raj’s sister Priya (Aarti Mann), and Howard (Simon Helberg) decides to move in with Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) instead of staying with his mother. The writers lend each one its share of good gags, but more importantly, give Sheldon the role of sideline commentator. He’s joined by Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik), who decides to help Penny (Kaley Cuoco) cope with Sheldon’s new sweetie. Their well-meaning efforts score bullseye after bullseye: fed by the fact that they really want to comfort their friends rather than rub salt in the wounds (which they end up doing by default). The Big Bang Theory absolutely requires that factor if it wants to succeed the way it can.
This was a much better episode than the past few, although I enjoyed all of them, this one was fun. The whole Howard/Bernadette situation seemed a little rushed. They could have dragged that out for at least a couple of weeks. I don't recall any "genre" references in this episode.
